I have some white schedule 40 unions that I would like to paint black to match my pipe. Has anyone tried this before? I've seen many have painted rigid pvc pipe with no problem, but I haven't seen anyone paint unions or fittings. What kind of paint would be best to use?

Or is there some place that sells black unions? I can't find any.

done it. spray paint for plastic is good to use. never seen black unions but they do have schedule 80 pvc that's gray you can order from brs.

I think I read somewhere not to use schedule 80 fittings with schedule 40 pipe, is that false?

I believe that's false. At least I hope so because that's what I have installed currently.

You can use schedule 40 and 80 fittings together. Our tanks and pumps are not under enough pressure to cause any issues.
