There are some benefits for 2016 as I think each eb832 socket is a physical switched socket. Being able to see power draw on the socket is huge since you may think a pump is on while infact it's not. I'd it with the added cost maybe not. What Neptune should offer is a head unit upgrade price.

If all the 2016 brings to the table is trident tnough, it isn't worth upgrading until sone serious sales hit for the 2016....

Or maybe a combo unit that includes only a 2016, an EB832 abd a trident that is cost adjusted for not having all the extra stuff i already own.

I might consider that.

Or even better, just a 2016 and Trident combo.

I spent $800 on apex gear this year and have every accessory they make other than a dissolved oxygen module.

The 2016 by itself brings very little to the table.

If i were buying new then no question id get a 2016.

As an existing owner though....

For existing owners I personally see very little reason to upgrade unless you are wanting the Trident. All the current modules work with the classic and from current capability they are the same (referring to the head unit).

I have read somewhere, and I wish I could find the article, that this is in the works. Neptune wanted to have enough full systems manufactured that they could afford to sell the head unit by itself as an upgrade. From my understanding, you can buy a head unit by itself now but only to replace yours if you damaged it somehow.

Most of us installed flow meters for main pumps and reactors already.

Over the weekend I pulled the trigger on a Classic Apex with Salinity Module. I realized that it didn't come with a display and didn't think that was a big deal until I began to read the startup information and saw that there is a key that can be seen on the display that is necessary to tie the Apex to Fusion. Is there a work around for that? I don't see a need to have the remote display if you program everything from Fusion. Thanks for the help.

If I remember correctly you can get the fusion “key” from the classic dashboard. You will need to access the classic dashboard from your computer for a number of functions with the classic. You can program outlets from fusion but can’t do things like create virtual outlets, set up modules, calibrate probes etc from fusion with the classic. You should be okay without the display.

Thanks for the reply. Is the classic dashboard accessed from Apex’s website? How do I access it?

Until it is link to Fusion you access the Apex locally to get to the classic dashboard generate the token/key.

This is done by connecting the Apex via ethernet/wifi to your local network then navigating to its local IP address (usually something like 192.168.1.x, if you access your router you can look at what IP addresses are being used to figure out which is the Apex). If I remember correctly you should also be able to find it easier by typing apex.local into your browser.

Then set up an account at apexfusion.com and enter in the token/key number to link them.

Ok that sounds good. When you type in apex.local do you need a user name and PW? If so what is the default? Thanks.

Go to Neptune’s website and find the documentation links under support, and start reading the comprehensive reference manual. It was originally written by users and was later adopted and made official by Neptune. Initial system setup and accessing the dashboard isn’t something you can just stumble through.

Ok I will do that. Thanks for the help and looking forward to joining the Apex family.

Thanks for the heads up. If I don’t really need it I’d rather spend money on the additional modules I’ll need to complete my install.

Display is not required for any Apex, nor is it required to connect to Apex Fusion.

Functionally the black and the orange labeled Apex Classic are the same, however the black units transitioned to the new labelling clear back in 2012 so do realize how old the equipment is that you will be getting (at least 5 years, possible as much as 8). It may not matter, but like with all hardware there are certain components that have a lifespan. Also, in the many years we have produced that model Apex, there have been small improvements to the hardware - as is the case with any product.

In conclusion, realize that there are trade-offs to a good price.

Just learning the diff between orange, black....can apex be operated and managed by an ipad? If i was buying now seems the gray/orange is the way to go. I am upgrading from a rkl so just need the basics plus added power plugs

I've been going back and forth between the Classic and the 2016. I finally bought the Classic model mainly because the modules are seperate. I realized in case of a failure, I'd rather be without a module than the brain. You cant send in a section of the 2016 model if something goes south.
Thats just my idea.
