So I had a bad Dino bloom and made the difficult decision to do a blackout. Started Wednesday at 8 pm and just left it all dark till 8 this morning which made it a full 84 hours.
Took cardboard down and the water and tank look amazing...for now.
Lost my beautiful naso tang the first night but my two clowns and one chromis and hippo tang are looking better than they did. All inverts are good. Corals closed but don’t look damaged.
Currently:
Have had carbon reactor running BRS ROX carbon since Friday morning.
Just put skimmer back in...should I run it wet or dry?
Just plugged UV back in. Had it off during blackout because I added 12 lbs of live rock and 1 bottle each of Seed and Microbacter 7 so was advised to keep UV and skimmer off while bacteria populated.
Have my LEDs on for the normal number of hours but only blue/purple/uv channels on at 1% with a max ramp to 10% then back down.
Thoughts? Advice? I do have people in my local club helping me and I have followed their awesome help but just want to make sure I’m doing all I can to prevent this from happening again.
Have t tested water yet this morning but yesterday
T-78.5
Amm 0 (ATI)
NO2 0 (ATI)
NO3 5-10 (Red Sea)
PO4 .05 (Hanna)
S.G. 1.025 handheld refractometer
Pics aren’t great because I don’t have filters but one is of the Naso (Sage) that I lost showing all the dinos on the bottom but they were everywhere. One is showing blacked out tank and last two are this morning with everything looking crisp and clean. All other livestock is well and happy. No losses other than Naso. Miss him so much!

Sorry about the Naso. I would get a microscope and ID the dinos. Your nutrients are good. I would also run your UV from and back to DT until you get rid of dinos. Keep changing GAC weekly for now as well. What size is your tank and UV?

I did get them identified but will have to go back and look. They were not the worst ones. Looked like egg shaped brown swimming around. Made the strings. Can’t remember the genus.
Just bought new tubing yesterday so we can run UV from DT, haven’t reconfigured yet but will do it soon, watching grandkids.
Tank is 125g 72x18x23 with a Trigger Sapphire CR44 sump. UV is Coralife Turbotwist rated for up to 250g
Sorry to be ignorant but what does GAC stand for?
Thank you!

Sounds like you are on top of this. From your description you likely have ostreopsis. Which is good because the right amount of UV is typically very effective against them.

Here’s the bad news. I don’t think your UV is strong enough. The manufacturer’s recommendations are good for things like clarifying water. But we (reefers) have learned that we need about one watt uv per every 3 gallons of tank water for dino eradication. You would likely need 40 ish watts of UV and I believe your unit is only 18. I would try yours, knowing that likely you’ll need to bump it up later. If/ when you get a larger UV you’ll want to run it slow, about 150-300 gph. Again, this flow rate will go against manufacturers recommendations. So we run bigger UV at slower rates for dinos. I personally would get something in the 50 watt range.

GAC is simply granular activated carbon. The ROX that you are currently using is GAC.

Good luck with the tank and the grandkids!

You got Dino because you probably had no phosphate in your tank. Best to stop GFO if you are using it. How old is this tank running. Bacteria like Vibrant will help but takes 9 weeks.

Thank you. I had originally purchased a Pentair UV but it was so large I just couldn’t make it work in the space I had available. Kinda hurting for money right now but will see about getting something stronger. Is there one that is compact but with the necessary wattage? The Pentair was about 5’ long and we just couldn’t make it work.
Thank you.

I’ve never run GFO. Tank has been running since February. Feels like a long time but not really.

Thank you.
I have a 57 watt aqua UV that is pretty compact but expensive.
