I purchased an aquarium that I got a lot of dry live rock that came with it. The rock is long dead (garage for 6+ months) and I have been bleaching it to get the junk off. At this point everything green is off of it, but I still see a lot of purple from the dead coralline. My question is does the color mean that it still has organic matter in it or do I need to keep bleaching it till it is totally white. Everything but the coralline is white and I don't want any organics leaching when I set up the tank. Thanks.

How long have you let it sit in the bleach?
Have you done any rinsing in RODI water?
I've always done 24hrs in bleach water, then 3 or 4 rinse cycles in clear RODI water with a power head. I feel that's the import part. Then let dry and good to go. Your going to have ''leaching'' of something regardless of what you do but that what's your cycle is for!

Lot's of ways to skin the preverbal cat, but I had the same situation. I soaked in bleach for a day or so as FL_Reefer described, then rinsed. I took it a step further though and actually took a small wire brush and scrubbed/cleaned off as much as possible. Rinsed and let it dry for a couple of days. I then let the rock "cure" in saltwater with power head for nearly two months while I built the rest of my system. So when I eventually put it in the display, my cycle time was very short because I basically cured/cycled the rock first. But as indicated above, I think it could just go in the display and be part of your normal cycle.

For what it's worth, and hopefully not jinxing myself here, other than a small and painless bout of diatoms, I have had no nuisance algae in the year it's been up and running.

Thanks for the input. I ended up buying new rock as I didn't have enough of the stuff I was bleaching anyway. At least this way all the rock is the same if any issues arise.
