IMG_5009.JPG IMG_5008.JPG My fav fish full of character mysteriously died today whilst I was at work, he was fine in the morning, no spots or marks on his body was eating normal.

But his stomach was hugely inflamed and white, what could cause this? he was in my DT.

The white specs is sand and pods that were on him.

Not sure his poo was always normal.

Maybe he ate a bristleworm?

Maybe an internal infection of some sort. It's hard to guess at this point.

has anyone seen anything like it? I did feed them a frozen clam on the half shell but I can not imagine it would be from that?

Or is there anything I should do to the DT?

If his poop was normal and never white and stringy then I'd hesitate to say intestinal worms/parasites. But I know they can cause a distended tummy. If he wasn't having problems with buoyancy or keeping himself upright, then a swim bladder disorder is unlikely as well. I would suggest keeping an eye on all the other fish. Give them a good look over and be sure they all appear normal in behavior and appearance.

No he was fine, swimming was normal, all my other fish are also fine, no twitching, scratching or anything eratic. His appetite was normal, poop normal. My DT has a very low bioload.

The only thing i done yesterday was syphon the substrate as I had a little cyano growing, could eating anything i disturbed have done it? Every now and then my coral beauty and him will have a little scrap but nothing serious as they both like the same section of live rock and i feed some frozen clam.

I still think it was worms. If you still have the fish you could cut it open and take a look. I seriously don't think it was the clams or the substrate. Unless you just have a really bad batch of clams???

I will have to do it tomorrow, are they contagious?

Intestinal worms are contagious.. they spread when another fish eats the poo of an infected fish. Totally gross but it happens quite a bit. :)

I've been doing some reading and I've came across a few posts saying it can occur if they don't have enough algae to eat, which could be true as mine mostly ate mysis etc as he was the only herbivore in the tank, I still feed him algae flakes and he picked at rocks but it might not have been enough. i was unable to dissect his stomach as my waste was collected before I could remove him.

My findings were mostly with algae blennies but one or two regarding bicolour did come up
