Bloody Mary Monti???

This one is more red/pink. The orange nadosa is orange. The polyp colors are also not the same. Still think it is the Bloody Mary...

The Bloody Mary is a Atlantis Aquarium named coral, also grown out by Steve Tyree. The full name is "Bloody Mary Montipora cebuensis". Now the OPs Montipora could very well be the same species as Atlantis's or Tyree's Bloody Mary, Montipora cebuensis. But with out knowing the lineage it can not truly be a Bloody Mary Monti, it would be an impostor. Plus it is still small, there are other species of Montipora that can be that color and have similar verracae bumps.
For now I would keep an open mind about it until you find out the certainty of its linage or a better species ID comes along.

I love how people get hung up on lineage. If it looks good and the price is right, then buy it. If not, move on. I traded with a guy and this is what I got. It looks identical to some pics online and similar to some. I'm calling it Bloody Mary because it looks like the Bloody Mary. I'm not calling it the Atlantis or Tyree Bloody Mary because I don't know if that's where it came from. If someone asks me about the lineage, that's what I'll tell them.
It's just too funny to me that it matters where I got something. By the way, anyone got any Tyree Rastas available so I can pay 5 times the going rate? A Rasta is a Rasta no matter who you buy it from, right?

SPS are a bit pickier with lineage because at least with zoas, like rastas, it's definitely the same because they look exactly the same. You can tell just by pattern. SPS is structure and blah blah... I'm not too great with SPS yet to know much. Most of the rastas in the hobby probably are the tyree lineage. Same with purple hornets, they came from reef pets but no one is really putting reef pets in the front of purple hornets. But then say fruit loops and some other zoas come in from the wild all the time by the colonies. If it looks like a fruit loops, why isn't it? Just because it wasn't from the guy who named them fruit loops does that mean there's now 100 different diff fruit loops that have to be called something else other than fruit loops? Nope, they're all still just fruit loops. Names are just given to corals so that we can associate/reference them with they look like.
Lineage is a whole different thing. Lineage would mean that it actually came from where you market it as. For all I know, I could go and find some blue tenuis and call it ORA Joe the Coral or Rosko's Blue. Or some blue-ish tort with green base and call it ORA Cali Tort when it was a wild piece. They're both similar enough that a frag of blue tenuis could fool anyone and probably not know for years. But by putting ORA you mean to say that it actually is an ORA piece. People try to associate what they have with an already named piece just for value.
If you sell it, just be sure to say it's unlineaged because people will assume it's either the tyree or ATL piece because you called it the same. We're (or at least me) not yelling or anything, just answering your question which was you asking if it's the Bloody Mary Monti. It is not the ATL/Tyree Bloody Mary Monti if it's not lineage. You can just call it "MGDTH's Bloody Mary Monti." Or if you really want to know, grab a frag of lineaged bloody mary monti (ATL is one of my LFS, they got lots!) and see if they fuse. I do think that your piece looks awfully similar to the pieces I see at ATL. But I'm not a big fan of it, so I didn't really really look. :squigglemouth: Another good example are strawberry shortcakes. They're coming in all the time and are always called strawberry shortcakes or something like that, but unique corals was the first (to my knowledge) to name it strawberry shortcake. They could all be the same for all I know, but if you put UC Strawberry shortcake then ppl will assume it's lineage to Unique Corals. So lineage gets messy when people start putting the lineaged name in front of their corals.

Understand your point, but that's why I'm not calling it the Tyree or Atlantis. Doesn't make sense to call it the mgdth's Bloody Mary as I am just a hobbyist of hundreds if not thousands who may have an un-lineaged coral. Why bother? A Tri-Color is a Tri-Color.
