have they grown a lot in 3 months?? how big did you buy them at and how big are they now??

they were under 2 inches or right at when I got them I would say close to half an inch bigger but the main dif i notice is the thickness i feed them 3 times a day usually one mysis cube and a chunk of RODs frozen fish food through out the day and they eat like crazy and their probably twice as thick as when I got them

this is the only vid I have of all 3 out sorry about the blues this is from end of last mo

I have my blotch anthias over two years now. For those that had followed BRS 160 build, my blotch is nowhere as large as theirs. I think their size will vary based on how often you feed and how much. I feed 2-3 times a day and its growth seems normal to me. My tangs has grown much more than the anthias probably because not only do they eat algae but also all other feedings (3-4, algae or not).

I am assuming you're asking due to potential fish size / tank size concern?

it's about 3" long and closer to 2" high. it's definitely thicker in the middle.

these are not the best shots. just took a few quick shots while drinking my coffee this morning. lights are out till afternoon. if you need better shots, it's best after lights come on as it tends to hang out in the middle water column above the corals and rock structures. lmk.

it likes to use those caves. during the day, it comes out and most of the time just hangs out waiting for food. not a active swimmer; does not swim from one end to other end of the tank or anything. it's more like a Kaudern's Cardinalfish in the fact it stay in a relative zone most of the time.

Will blotched eat smaller fish??
not likely imo unless it's like the size of prawns, mysis shrimp or smaller. i have two smaller vanderbuilt chromis and the most it does is chase them away from food or outside of it's area.

i have noticed over the past two years it has gotten a little territory somewhat. same as the vanderbuilt chromis, it does the same to the two pyramid butterfly which are 2x / 3x bigger than it. generally it just mind it's own business within it's area of the tank.

Got my blotch yesterday. He’s already eating but like to spend most of his time in his cave. Here’s a pic and a quick vid. Beautiful fish. So glad I bought him. I was having second thoughts but colours are great and I really like the unique shape and fins.

Congrats! Definitely a unique fish that is not commonly seen at your LFS. It's also easy to care for.

I have noticed their color fade slightly with age I think.

Since these are deeper water fish, it may take time for them to get used to bright aquarium lighting if yours is not aquaculture. That's common as mine did that too. Eventually it will likely hang out open water in the middle of the water column of your tank.

btw - hopefully you have a lid on your tank. I originally had two and lost one due to wood floor surfing. Pricy lesson for me for sure :disappointed-face:.

Yes I have a lid. I’ve been lucky. I have fish that people say alway go carpet surfing but they never seem to so that I’m my tank. I think cause it’s on the basement with less traffics.
Funny my blotch thinks is a yellow assessor and hangs upside down in the cave

Here’s him in the cave and a nice pic of him out swimming. Less shy already.

I am in my 6th one. They seem to do great for a while, longest one for me is 6 months. They all have eaten great then one day wedged in a rock dead . Most lfs have echoed similar experiences with them that I have talked too.
How often did you feed them?

I just received one today from QLD to SYD. So he’s in the qt recovering b4 I add him to my nano. Nice thread. I hope he survives as they do cost a small fortune but very very pretty

They’re much more hardy than some people lead on. I’ve had three of them in my tank for years now. They are seemingly shy fish so a good quarantine tk help them get past the hump of eating prepared foods and starting to come out of hiding seems to be very beneficial to them. They made they eat frozen they quickly take to pellet or just about anything else, in it experience.

Thank you. Can I ask do they color up in time as mine is nearly transparent. I guessed from stress but he’s swimming around his qt but hasn’t eaten as yet. I’ll try mysis n mixed frozen tonight. He will colour up I’m guessing.

Hi guys in my experience they are super hardy. They eat a lot. The ones in my seahorse tank are about 2 yrs old and change. They get pretty big. The ones in my reef are about a yr old and have quadrupled in size in a heavily stocked tank. Great fish
