I got two blotched anthias from nyaquatic and both didn't make it, I'm I'm doing something wrong? First one died the next day and the second one died within hours, didn't even make till I got home from work.

I assume you checked peramiters. How long you acclimate for ? Those are a deep water fish and fish store probably had then I a low salinity

My salinity is 1.025 I didn't even have time to feed them. Should I acclimate shorter or longer? Some people tell me to do it longer some say to just temp acclimate cause they already stress, I don't know. Just kinda sad cause this was going to be my last fish for the tank

Acclimation shouldn't really go longer than 30min if salinity is close due to ammonia toxicity.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your fish. It's always especially tough when it was a particularly expensive fish.

I would say acclimation should take as long as it takes to get salinity to match. If NY Aquatics has salinity at a super low salinity like my LFS it can take longer than if it's kept higher.

If you took a fish that was in a salinity below 1.020 and threw it in a tank that's at 1.025 the added shock of transport and salinity could have done it.

^ If that were the case, fish wouldn't survive freshwater dips.

And although a borbonius isn't found in intertidal zones, representatives from many reef dwelling species can be and they are able to handle rapid salinity variances without any physically adaptive changes.

I just suck at reefing but I'm addicted! Lol this will be my last hobby, it's more expensive than suping up cars

Fish get freshwater dips for 5-10-20 minutes, not hours

Going from .20-.025 salinity over a half an hr is not as drastic as going from .025-0.00 instantaneously, even if for a few minutes.

What that instant shock in a freshwater dip is why it is effective for parasites. And the reason fish won't survive longer dips is because they won't survive in freshwater regardless. If you took a reef fish from reef conditions and tried to acclimate to freshwater it would die regardless of how long it took to acclimate it.

I'm with the team that takes them out of the bag immediately due to ammonia. Acclimation is great when you're going from one body of good water to another, but I don't do it if they've been shipped overnight. There will be ammonia in the bag and stewing in that will cause permanent damage. I did not acclimate my trio of borbs and had them for 5 years (at which time I killed them with neglect, I'm afraid to say).

The best way if possible is to contact the seller ahead of time and have fresh saltwater made up that matches what the fish is used to. Then bring that water up to match your reef. That being said if your getting fish shipped ammonia is your worst enemy not changes in salinity so getting them out of that old water fast is key. Purchasing from a lfs ten minutes down the road is a different story.

You don't suck at reefing. You care enough to try to do the best for your fish, but some stuff is just beyond your control.
