My blue damsel has developed white / grayish area on its body. It’s been like that for a few weeks, but it’s getting worse. He is otherwise swimming and eating well. Any ideas of what that might be?

How long have you had the fish? What are the tank parameters? Do you have other fish?

If it is truly velvet, you would need to remove the fish (and potentially the other fish) into a quarantine system.

It’s a 65 gallon tank. I’ve had the tank for about 3 months and the damsel was the first fish I introduced, about 2 months ago. I think this discoloration has been increasingly growing for the past 3 weeks or so, but I think it’s getting worse in the past few days.

I need to add that about one month ago I introduced 5 new fish and one died in 48hs. We think this was caused by increased ammonia levels and since then I’ve been trying to get it back to 0. It’s at 0.25 for two weeks now. Not sure if there is any relationship.
