Blue Eye Blondie frag not opening

Hi All,

I have a Blue Eye Blondie zoa frag that has closed and will not open. I have tried high and low light as well as high and low flow but nothing seems to work. They were open for the first couple days then closed and have not opened again. All my other zoas are fine. Any ideas?

Yes please provide this info for us to better assist you. BTW after you noticed that they were closed did you moved them several times throughout your tank? Usually polyps like those don't like that type of condition of having been placed here and there.

Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphates - 0 or undetectable
Calcium 440
Alkalinity 9.5
Magnesium 1400
PH 7.5 - 7.8 (due to CO2 in the house since it's closed up for winter)
Temp 77.5 - 79 small increase through day after lights are on

Tank has been up and running since Dec 2011 but that was an upgrade from my 75G that was up since 2006.

I have only moved them twice since 11-17. They went from my frag rack to a shaded section of rock to try slightly different parameters. They were dipped on 11-17 in Flatworm Exit and then Revive before entering the tank to prevent potential pests. They were open the first few days then they closed up.

My suggestion is to try light lugols dip. I have had more than few zoa frags recover after dipping in lugols and i usually try this after the zoas refuse to open after a week. I use a very light lugols solution and dip for 5-10 mins.

Or if the polyps look healthy closed you could wait them out and do not move them to see if they acclimate to their spot. At first sign of tissue recession i would dip tho, the suckers can melt fast if going downhill.

i hope they open up for you! i hate it when zoas remain closed.

Salt seems a lite high. Ime if the polyps look healthy then leave them be but if your paranoid I would dip in furan 2. I know that furan 2 is only for zoa pox but I tried it out on a zoa that was not opening and did not have zoa pox and it opened up a couple days later. But I have dipped in furan 2 and one of the zoas I dipped lost its color for a week or 2 and ten colored right back up.

Now to source Lugols or Furan 2 locally... It sure would be nice to have a good saltwater selection in town...lol.

+1 salt. My experience is some zoas like lower salinity 1.024-.025

I picked up a frag of these on the 17th at the TCMAS Expo...same as you, they opened up the first day or two, then one closed up and then the other. The first one ended up as reddish/brown goo. I removed it, or what was left and hoped for the best. The second polyp disappeared the next day.

Lugols was done tonight. A local member of our club had some and brought it over. Wish me luck as after this it is wait and see what happens...

These are a lower light zoa. If you put them in high light initially, it might take some time in lower light for them to recover.

In lower light, they get nice and big too. Hoping that everything works out for you!

I've had luck with a 50/50 peroxide dip on zoas that weren't opening. just like 3 minutes in the dip. I've also had luck with fresh water dips. Just throwing it out there. Good luck!
