I have one blue eyed cardinal that I've had for some time. I acquired it from the LFS. It was originally in a small 16 gallon fluval but was moved to a RS 425 several months ago. The fish tends to isolate himself from all of his tank mates. No one has ever picked on him but he swims alone and at night is the only fish swimming in the bottom corner all alone. During the daily feeding frenzy he stays out of the fray and only gets the small pieces that drift his way.

I've read the blue eyes will school together and I wanted to pick up 2 more to keep him company. I can't find them anywhere. Would a pajama or other cardinal possibly buddy up with the blue eye? Anyone know where I can get a blue eyed cardinal??

Although, after isolation for so long, I don’t know if adding more blue eyes would stress him. He might get defensive, or more shy. Most cardinal fish are shy until nighttime anyway. I think unless you REALLY want to, he is probably fine, and adding another may hurt.

He is a very peaceful fish. But he's the only blue eye so that could be a concern. Thanks Malifry97!

chances are it wont school with a PJ cardinal, it will need other blue eyed cardinals to school with.

I wasn't familiar with this fish, so it peaked my interest. They are pretty fish! Sustainable aquatics has a really nice writeup about them, so maybe they are raising them... maybe a good place to contact to see if they have any or will have any in the near future.

It seems yours may feel stressed since they do best in schools of 3 or more and they needs overhangs, etc... since mainly nocturnal. You may want to adjust your feeding schedule to give him some food after lights out.
