Hello. I have a 210 gallon saltwater reef tank. Have a blue hippo tang that I’ve had for 3 years. Probably about 8 inches long that over the weekend became less active and I am now sure is blind in both eyes? The eyes don’t appear cloudy. She is plenty fat and in good health otherwise. The tank has a naso tang, sailfish tang, one purple, and three yellow tangs. All other tangs were added between 3 -3 1/2 years ago. Nothing has been added to the tank in past 6 months not even corral. Any ideas on cause or treatment? I’d think it’s just a fluke but it appears to be both eyes. Unless she was blind in one eye before and never noticed it as she functioned and would swim just fine. But now just swims into rocks and corners. Any help, treatment or ideas would be appreciated

That sounds more like a lateral line issue to me than blindness. Many fish can avoid obstructions even in the dark through sensing the world around them.

Do you run a ground probe in your system? I would worry that you could have an electrical issue that is causing the fish to not sense its surroundings properly. Not likely if it is the only fish impacted but worth checking.

Otherwise, if it is medical, it is over my head. Let's get @Humblefish or @melypr1985 to take a look. We may even be able to get an opinion from @Paul B.

^^ I would test for stray voltage first before we consider blindness as a possible explanation.

Poor guy. Since you don't have stray voltage, I'm guessing you run a ground probe?

His HLLE isn't even too bad for a larger Hippo imo. Other than what I am assuming is stuff on the glass he still looks very good!

Yes I have ground probe in my sump not in the display tank but not getting readings in either location. He’s still hanging in there but fading. I can tell he’s lost weight. Kind of at a loss But thanks for suggestions and help. Never hurts to try anything at this point

Any idea how old he is? He looks healthy so I'm not seeing anything that indicates a disease. :(

Maybe @Humblefish can address this again when he gets back on today.
