Had my hippo for a week. Stopped eating 2 days ago. Been laying on bottom and breathing heavily. Got stuck on overflow today. Ammonia is between 0-.25, 0 nitrites, 5-10 nitrates. 78°, ph of 8, 1.023 salt. Don’t know what to do

I did not quarantine but will definitely start. Don’t know if that would help, can’t see any signs of illness

I would start with a FW dip to check for flukes. They can get into the gills and basically suffocate a fish. Do a FW dip then get into QT. If you find flukes during the dip treat with Prazi. You will more than likely need to QT any other fish in the tank and let it go fallow. If the fish starts to develop ich or velvet symptoms (raised white spots) then treat with copper in QT.

So pretty much you recommend he just kill the fish by recommending every treatment possible to find out what is wrong? nice.

How is what he recommended killing a fish? A freshwater dip isnt going to kill a fish. FRT THEN states what to do if he sees flukes or if ich developes. He doesnt say to treat without seeing anything?

If it got stuck on the overflow, and lying on the bottom, he’s probably a goner. Sorry.

Do you have other fish in that tank? You shouldn't have any ammonia in a cycled system, i would suggest fixing this issue before adding more fish. How old is the tank? Is there enough surface agitation?

Wow that escalated quickly, or he could just do nothing and watch his fish die.

If the fish has ich and is in the DT the tank would be needed to fallow for 76 days (No fish in the tank)
Also ich would appear as if the fish has white dots all over his body

Ich will be always present in your system. Going fallow is a waste of time IMO. I have had ich for the last year for about 4-5 times. My fish got it and went away on its own. As long you have a healthy fish, ich should not be a problem. At the very last, I did a copper treatment in a separate system and then put the fish back in the "infested" tank. It has been 6 months without signs of it now.

Solid advice. While I’m no expert on freshwater dips I do quarantine every fish before it goes in my tank after learning the hard way and having to pull all the rock out of my tank to catch the fish after an ich outbreak and let the tank go fallow and that was almost 3 years ago and haven’t had a sick fish since. I’ve quarantined tangs and the most sensitive wrasse with copper. I do use copper power because it’s easier on the fish

Please do not attack others. In no way did he do anything wrong.

Id recommend Cupramine. I've always used it, never had a loss due to it or to ich. At times I wonder if the captive bread fish are getting more resilient towards ich? I have a feeling that they've been evolving to be stronger and stronger against it due to the constant breeding in captivity (no all fish, since a lot of them are still captured in the sea).

Not true. Ich free systems are possible with proper QT.
