About a month ago I got a small blue hippo tang from an LFS. Jumped the gun a bit as this LFS is about 2 hrs from home. She had recently gotten into the store before we came through and she looked pretty healthy.
We brought her home, gave her a quick acclimation (about 10 mins), and put her in my 10 gallon qt tank. The next day she was showing signs of ich. The white spots (about a dozen) had mostly disappeared in 2 days, with one remaining lasting 3. About 2 days after all signs disappeared, I transferred her to a 20 gallon.
At this time I also started slowly dropping salinity. Unfortunately, about 2 days later she was covered in ich again. I continued dropping salinity, without additional tank transfers. At this point she still hadn't eaten much and was very shy. I dosed prazipro and within 5 days she had started voraciously eating mysis and some pellets. She has to this day refused to even look at nori. Tied to clips, rocks, PVC, anything.
After 2 prazi doses over 2 weeks, she was still seeming healthy and has not shown any signs of additional ich. I did notice a white spot on the edge of her dorsal fin towards her tail. I watched it and over 3 days her fin slowly receded from the spot. You can see in pic the slight indention in her fin. She also began reacting less to food.
I then dosed with API general cure. The next day she was quite lethargic and showed little interest in food. The day after, she was next to lifeless. She literally only "swam" by being blown around by the powerhead. This meant she would spin around upside down and on her side. She seemed to have trouble floating and instead generally laid on the bottom panting. This didnt worry me much as they seem to do this, but she stayed stationary for hours. I had turned off the powerhead to keep her from banging around in the tank. There is still a power filter running to keep the tank aerated.
I gave her a freshwater dip for about 2 minutes until her breathing began getting too slow and high effort and I returned to the tank. Her breathing got better almost instantly.
This is day 2 now of minimal movement. She just lays on the bottom not interested in food or moving, even with some gentle prodding. She's also starting to look exceptionally thin. I put my carbon filter back in the tank to try to pull the general cure out.
We have been in hypo for about 2.5 weeks now. Ammonia hasn't been elevated without getting water changes or Prime.
What else can I try for the poor thing? I also have a clownfish that is doing quite well this whole time.
