I just noticed my very healthy blue hippo has a string-like thing coming out of his gill on one side and a bump on the other. any ideas?

A parasite potentiality

This is what I use

  • Anti-parasitic: Copper Power with a Hanna High Range Copper Colorimeter (HI702) for testing. Treats Ich & velvet.
  • Anti-parasitic: Metronidazole (e.g. Seachem Metroplex); treats brook & uronema.
  • Dewormer: Prazipro or API General Cure.

I don’t see this as parasitic and hard to see with blue on blue
Please repost under white lighting but may be skin tag from injury

I agree, looks to be a skin tag or an algae filament stuck to the skin. A clear photo under white light would help.
If the fish is showing no other symptoms and is eating good, and not breathing fast, I would just watch it for now.
