So I have had this fish in my tank for 5-6 months now and it looks and acts like it is really healthy. A few weeks ago my cleaner shrimp died on me due to lack of food since I switched to pellets for several months. After the cleaner died the rabbit started spending time near the surface gulping air through its gills. It will do this for several times probably once every ten minutes. Do you think that maybe the fish has some kind of parasite that the cleaner was keeping under control? I don't really want to replace the cleaner shrimp but I don't want the rabbit to die either?

ive seen rabbits do thids many times.... but if you think he did better with cleaner than i would get another cleaner but i wouldnt worry about it.

This is pretty common among rabbits. I used to have a FoxFace that did this all the time. He would suck up some air and start playing with the bubbles coming from his gills. Was pretty funny to watch.

For what its worth, I've read a bunch of threads about this so you should be ok.

Well thanks for the info. I actually searched before posting but apparently I did not search for the right words since I couldn't find much on it.

Mine does the same thing pretty frequently, almost always after I feed, I think it's because he wants more food.
