A hermit crab will only eat the clam if the clam is already dying. If the crab even went next to it and bother it, it would have slammed shut.
When a clam is dying they will usually wither away in 1 night. After they are dead or practically done they cannot close their shell for defense anymore and its noticed. Thats when a hermit will go to town... Cleaner shrimp for that matter will be much faster than the crab...
