Hi everyone,

I picked up my new Niger Trigger today and I've just noticed some strange markings on both sides of his body and wondered if anyone knew what they are? I only noticed after the tank lights were out and it was just the light in the room that were lighting him. The white spots are on the glass, it's the weird sort of circular dark marks that I'm talking about.

It looks like he was injured. Not sure you need to do anything yet (I'll leave that recommendation up to others) but do you have any antibiotics available if needed?

Thanks for the quick reply Brew! All I have to hand is some Melafix. Is there something else specific you'd suggest I should order to have here just in case I need it?

I wish I could give you advice but I'll leave this one to the pro's. I like to keep Metroplex, Kanaplex, and Furan-2 on hand at a minimum.

Is this a little guy by chance? Like in the 2-3 inch long range? Those almost look like bites from a blenny.

He's around 5 inches. It was just him and a really big Annularis angel in a tank at the shop when I got him.

I find a few of my chromis do this. the wedge themselves in rocks then have these dark splotches.

Just had a quick look on google and due to our laws surrounding anti biotics I don't think I can buy and of the three meds you listed here in the uk!! [emoji35]

Cool thanks, I'll just keep an eye on him and look for some alternative meds that are actually available over here to have to hand just in case!

Looks like an injury or bruising, probably from getting scraped up on the rocks. Triggers are tough, so odds are it will heal on its own. Since you can't get any real antibiotics, I would use that Melafix if it starts looking worse.

I used to have a Niger Tigger, they will wedge themselves into the rock especially at night. Seeing how he's in a new tank with unfamiliar rock, maybe he just needs to get accustomed to his surroundings, letting his body used to the rock.
Just IMHO.

I agree I'll bet it heals fine, they do commonly wedge in to rocks like a niger trigger!

Thanks very much for putting my mind at rest everyone! He definitely doesn't seem in any discomfort and is eating great!

My triggers are always scraped up, it's how they live like ruff and tumble boys. I'd keep an eye on and let it run it's course.

I agree with this! They aren't delicate swimmers. My niger is always dinged up because he's a bull in a China shop.

Just be glad yours doesn't bite you.....because mine does.

Haha I'm sure it's only a matter of time!!

Can I ask what other fish you guys have in with yours? I'm not going to lie he was a bit of an impulse buy. I saw him in the shop and came home for about two hours to do some research, most things I read said he was one of the most peaceful triggers, then I went back and bought him. I'd only ever seen photos of one and I'm not ashamed to say I fell in love when I seen it in real life!
