Should I be concerned? Acting normally and eating like a pig. Probably got himself on a rock...

I only worry because think about it - jawfish spend their entire lives living in rock and sand burrows, they shouldn’t be prone to scraping their sides on things.
Tough for me to see much detail under the blue light, does the lesion seem to go down through the skin?

I would worry. I would love one of these guys but a big price tag for something that is prone to dying to "blue spot jawfish disease" which basically starts out as patches like that. Not sure if it is something bacterial brought on by warmer temps or what.

My tank is kept at 77 degrees hopefully cool enough. I just purchased a chiller to keep temps stable over the summer. The lesion is skin deep does not look like it goes any further down

This is what Bob Fenner had to say about them. He mentions their ideal temps being 50's-60's. I always assume they perish from a bacterial infection possibly brought on by tropical temps but not sure, that is totally me just guessing. I have wanted to up a tank around 60 degrees to see if one would truly thrive for years but it is not cheap to do so.

Sorry to say. But my experience is that is the start of BSJ disease. Starts with an area of discoloring. Keep temp down, and try to keep it eating. Best of luck.
