Anyone have experience with theses guys? I plan on setting up a 120g in the future. I've heard many mixed reviews on keeping them, but the general consensus seems to be that they don't fare well in a home reef.

The problem with them seems to be that they like cooler water, low 70's. They will tolerate our warmer reefs for a while but long term many don't seem to fare too well.

With that said, are there other fish that could be suitable tank mates in a temperature appropriate fowlr system?

Many "normal" fish we keep in our tanks can handle lower temps in my experience. If you were to keep the tank around 72* you shouldn't have a problem keeping just about anything. Let's see if I can get you some more specific answers from some fish experts. @Humblefish @3FordFamily @eatbreakfast [HASHTAG]#reefsquad[/HASHTAG]

Catalina gobies, garibaldi and if your tank size allows for one California stingray. Check out coldwatermarineaquatics.com

to be honest, I have little experience keeping fish at lower temperatures. Some of my tougher to keep fish were less apt to eat in temps even as low as 76 degrees. This is completely anecdotal but I had better success around 78-81.

I am sure several fish would be fine in lower temps though. For one, dissolved oxygen would likely be higher at lower temperatures. It would also theoretically slow metabolism and growth leading to increased lifespan

Also for what it's worth I tried one and it did not make it one week in quarantine. I am unsure why.

I had one for about a couple of months. He was my favorite! Such a personality! He built his little den and seem happy s a clam...till he went carpet surfing when I wasn't home. :( I don't have a lid of any sort on my tank, so my fault.

i had one as my first fish. he was flippin awesome, first things first... make sure you have a top!! secondly, a deep sandbed and plenty of rocks he can burrow under. had him over a year until i switched tanks, before i could get a top made he took the leap of faith. i was devastated... i even cried lol. but he was in a mixed reef with semi aggressive tangs, clowns, mandarins, anthias, basslet and a ton of cleaners. he'd even let the cleaner shrimp do their jobs. miss that dude :(

I love mine! He's so funny and makes tons of dens in the sand. I was lucky that my LFS wouldn't sell him to me until I made a top and showed him a picture of it. He's my favorite by far!

Make sure you have a lid.
Make sure your rock work is stable and resting on the bottom of the tank, not just on the sand.
Have deep enough sand to allow him to burrow.
Keep favorite corals higher up or else they will have sand thrown on them.
They will take small frag plugs from the sand bed and use them in constructing their den (whether they have corals on them or not lol)

My Pistol shrimp repeatedly stole my Xenia that was on a plug. I continuously rescued it until one day he managed to pull him right in the den when I was out. Lil brats!

Hi Meredith. I was wondering if you could tell me how you made your top for the tank? My issue is that I have a HOB Overflow and of the course the return pump hose going into the tank. I would like to have the option of a wrasse or a yellowhead jawfish, but I'm worried that they will find the 2' opening from the u-tube and return that is running down the back side of the tank. Any suggestions?

Hey there! I actually went to home depot and bought a kit for putting together your own window screen. It's cheap and it comes with everything you need to put it together. The frame cuts pretty easy and you can make fit around whatever you have hanging on the back of your tank. BRS also sells one that is pretty much the same thing except it has clear mesh. The screen from HD isn't clear, but if it's blocking any lights it's negligible.
