This might be one of my favorite fish and I use to have one in my old tank but he jumped :( Anyways fast forward to now I have a new set up with a cover but have Black Hawaiian "sand" in. I was curious if a blue spotted jawfish would manage that substrate? I had pink Fiji in the past and it seemed that he collected every large piece of shells or debris he could find for his burrow so I would assume it would not bother him. Anyone have experience with that fish and the large Hawaiian substrate?

These poor guys do not do well in captivity. They live in cold water. They require 72 to 74 temp at the most.
I would avoid getting them in, instead there are couppenof hardier fish that have similar personality and appearance to the blue spotted sawfish and in ly openion more suitable option to home aquariums.

Bluespots do require cooler waters as @Ohashimz states. Warmer temps are thought to shorten their lifespan.
Pearly jawfish do fine in warmer temps of most reef tanks. The white coloring makes them glow under the tank blue lights. Pearlies are also colonial jawfish. You can add more than one.
For Jawfish they need a sand that is not too fine (too help with burrow structure) and not too coarse. I am not familiar with Black Hawaiian sand size so can’t advise you there.
Avoid adding crushed coral - too jagged for jawfish. As you mentioned jawfish love using small shells of different sizes/shapes for their burrows. They will usually have 2 entrances to a burrow. Also at night they use a shell to “shut” the entrance(s) - like a door.

. Thank you!
Yes. My tank ran cooler so my bluespot did very well. He lived over 3 years & would have lived longer. But I had a horrible tank malfunction & lost most of my fish. Losing these 2 fish broke my heart. My jawfish & YWG shared a burrow for years. They had a symbiotic relationship and got along very well. They “guarded” the burrow together. The jawfish would get upset with the YWG when the goby would display @ my tangs.
My jawfish would take shells for its burrow from my hand. It would even bob its head @ shells far away from its burrow as if to say “get me that shell over there”. Jawfish are my favorite fish.

Wow. Kudos. U never even know these 2 coexsist.
I feel so sorry for the sawfish it's such a pretty fish people keep buying it and it rarely make it...I tried twice over 10 years the most it lived was the 2nd one lived for 2 years then it dies, I swore off getting any more cause i felt awful. I even ran my system at 72 degree for it. Since then I now run my system at 74 and like cold water inhabitants and coral like deep sea acros...
Am so sorry about your problem, hopefully you recovered.
Thank you, I kidd you not your avatar picture made my day...
