Blue Spotted Jawfish

Just got my BSJ today. Acclimated him and put him in.
Right away started to burrow. And at feeding time he went nuts for the brine and mysis mixture.
Usually if I get a fish that won’t survive it does not eat and looks weak from day 1. This one looks strong and healthy.
I have high hopes.
Just wanted to share.

I’ve already had some laughs.
a wandering hermit crab fell into his hole. The BSJ picked it up and spit him out like the intruder the little crab was… The crab ran away…
And I just put in the BSJ today…

I keep my tank close to 75.
I’ve read tons on this fish and results vary. My tank is well established for about 7 years now. And I have a decent depth sand bed.
I feel if it has a chance to survive, it’s better off in my aquarium.
I have fish alive much longer then their listed lifespan online. It’s kind of strange. But in this hobby there is no magic number for anything.
My green mandarin had been alive since my old tank. So for about 8 years now.
I have a diamond watchman goby that’s also from my old tank. That one is closer to 10 years old now.
My youngest fish before I added in the BSJ is about 2 years old.
I find the most important thing is stability.
Stable temperature.
Stable parameters.
Stable water changes.
Stable lighting schedule.
Stable feedings.
etc…
I’m new here but I’ve been reef keeping for about 3 decades. (Showing my age)

He may not starve but he can jump out for any reason. Hope you have top on the tank to keep him contained. Stronger and heathier fish jump higher and farther.

I absolutely have a top. I would probably be about 5-6 fish less if I didn’t.
I have a custom made top with netting. Its over a 125g tank. Nothing can jump out
I have a flame hawk for about 4 years now. I’m sure he has tried to jump out on many of occasions.

Yup. This also goes for many other types of fish.

I personally am aware of this and have a well built top with clear mesh netting. It covers the entirety of the top of the tank.
Unless the BSJ can lift a 60”x24” top with its jumping power - it’s not getting out.

So far all day since it’s been in the tank it’s burrowed one hole and has stayed in it.
what’s strange is the hole is very close to a burrow that the diamond watchman goby lives in. Think their tail ends may be touching.
But neither seems to care. The entire other side of the tank is free to be burrowed. But the BSJ decided to encroach..
Will see what happens.

There such fun characters, my new scape is specially designed for this fish. They also like small pebbles in the tank (coral) which they collect to block the entrance of there hole. One thing though they are escape artist so you will need a cover over the tank. Can’t wait to get mine back!

Love jawfish! Never tried a blue spot as my tank gets fairly warm in summer and I figured that may contribute to that mystery bacterial or such disease they can get. Hope yours does well.

Nice! I've had several of these in the past and currently own 3. They're one of my favorite saltwater fish. Currently trying to breed these two!
