My Blue Tang is eight years old (in my house). I moved him from my 90 gallon show to my 25 gallon cylindrical when I took the 90 down. I have a lot more flow in the 25. He seems to eat quite a bit more than he used to. I never noticed him doing this before, so, it's new to me. He has been taking afternoon naps, right after lunch, just like I want to. Anyone else notice this? Is he getting too tired from the flow? Is he old?

Thanks.

Here he is.

you have an adult hippo tang in a 25 gallon tank...

...and youre wondering why it is just hiding and laying around and not swimming?

It doesnt have enough room?
flow doesnt matter... youve basically stuck the tang in jail.

Lol, a little aggressive response, but true. The tank is considered too small for a hippo, also as far as it eating more goes I think that may be due to the flow i.e. with humans, more exercise = eat more. Same for fish maybe.

Yah that's no good....waaaaay to small. Some would argue the 90 was too small for that fish, let alone a 25. Poor fish

its true 25 gallon is torture for a 8 year old hippo tang. that tang is still just middle aged as they can live up to 20 years. I think you need to look at parting with that fish and letting it live the life it was used to.

Mine naps under frag racks or in top of pumps when they turn off. They are almost as weird as clowns. Everytime I move this chalice my hippo gets mad as hell. It's always brushing up near it when it itches almost like its hosting it lol

I hope this thread is a joke, otherwise poor fish. 8 year old hippo in a 25 gallon? The fish is hiding because he is beyond stressed...he's not taking naps he is trying to die.

My blue tang never stops moving btw

I know how everyone feels about my situation. I should have left out the details. I have brought this fish back from death....twice (please hold comments). Once was when he was tiny and dieing of ich in the LFS. I brought him home spent over two months nuturing him back to life. I ended up lowering the salinity to 1.009 for more than 30 days at above average temps to kill the parasite, then, spent another month bringing him back to 1.0255. Next, a few months ago when I was out of town, I had a relatively new skimmer pump short out and shock every coral in my system which left a thick, black substance all over the tank. Ichy was very stressed and got severe fin rot. I moved him to the 25 while the 90 was torn down for rebuilding. He has completely recovered and is extremely active 99% of the lighted day.

sorry man if he was a baby like 2 inches then you could get away with it for like 6 months but thats a big boy and if you dont move him soon things could get bad you dont want an ich outbreak!
goodluck!

even a 90g for an adult hippo tang... or any tang for that matter (yellows and smaller ones ie. bristletooth tangs could be fine in a 90g no problem), should have at least a 5ft tank, 6ft is preferable and 8ft is plenty for tangs. I have a 2 yr old blue hippo and he is literally non stop... if lights are on or activity is going on near the tank... he is out. the 25g without rock and sand could be used as a QT/holding tank for a week... maybe... but if youre rebuilding the 90 and are "in the process..." i would consider finding a new home for the tang in general as it most likely will die on you or kill itself in the 25g from sheer stress of the size of tank.

keep in mind this is an open water tang, in the wild used to swimming hundreds of miles...

im not being mean, im an animal lover and just dont like seeing fish/animals in areas too small. We wouldnt put a lion in a cage cuz its inhumane... why put a hippo tang in a tank too small to barely move. I work at an LFS and have had many tanks over the years, biggest problem in this hobby is the sheer lack of research one does prior to obtaining fish. Please do research and consider finding this fella a new proper home of adequate size.

+1. !!! I had a juve hippo in my 90 for about 7 months and I was forced to get him into a 125 that is 6 Ft long. They grow and need room...soon I am moving into a 300 as he will outgrow this one within the year I am sure. Even getting back to the 90 for a 8 yr old hippo...waaaaay to small

The fact that you care about "Ichy" is wonderful.
Perhaps he will be happier in the 90 gallon tank. He will certainly appreciate more room to travel around.
Good Luck with him !!

No research required. I saved this guy from near and certain death eight years ago. Maybe its time for him to move on (certain death again?) He's extremely active with a great and unique personality.

Being a round tank, he makes circuits at times. I can't believe he would recover from near death in an environment that would cause his death. Otherwise, I agree with the comments about an appropriate environment.

He is about four inches long.
