Blue Tang with marks around both eyes

Hi guys..

I am fairly new at the hobby and have had my first tank for 2 months now.
I currently have 2 Clown Fish, 1 Blue Tang, 1 Coral Beauty, 1 Pajama Cardinal, about 6 Blue Hermit Crabs, 1 Cleaner Shrimp and a Sand Sifting Star Fish.

I have tested all my water parameters and they are fine, with PH being a little low at 8.2

Today i noticed my Blue Tang had some purple around the eyes. It doesn't look like her eyes are swollen, but around them, there is some swelling. Check out the photo and please, any information is greatly appreciated.

The picture is too blurry to see anything, and actual numbers from your water test will be helpful

HIGH RANGE PH = 8.2ppm
Ammonia = 0ppm
Nitrite = 0ppm
Nitrate= 5.0ppm

Does the skin around the eyes appear pitted? Tangs will develop HLLE if not fed nutritious foods. Take a good look around the eyes and look for signs of damaged skin.
Are you feeding Nori on a regular basis?

Likely a vitamin defiency . What food (s) are you feeding?
Give it Nori (seaweed), Amino fortified foods, LRS frozen, Formula 2 and add liquid vitamin to the food 2-3X per week such as Selcon

Tangs, especially blue hippo, are very prone to HLLE. ( Head, lateral line erosion)
Feed lots of nori on a clip.
We feed the green and purple varieties.
None of our fish seem impressed with the red or brown varieties.

If the fish won't recognize the sheet of nori flapping in the breeze as food then just rubber band it to a tiny rock and drop it in the water. They don't eat the rubber band. ;-)
But they will naturally graze on algae on the rocks.
After a week it should figure out the clip idea and that will be a little easier than fishing out the rock every day.

If you are doing regular water changes your;
Magnesium
Calcium
and Alkalinity
should remain in fairly stable ranges.


Are you topping off evaporation with RODI fresh water every few days or every day?
I do ours about every 3rd day.
Most people do it daily and couldn't imagine waiting 3 days.
I work out of town a lot and try to do everything manually.
Better Half feeds the fish while I'm gone but keeps it to that level.
The fewer 'automatic' things that can break or need adjusting while I'm gone the better.

There's lots more to discuss

My blue tang has what appears to be scratches under her eyes. She sleeps in a tiny crevasse and I thought the rocks where scratching her. I'll post a pic when I get home. Could it be HLLE?
