I am wondering if I can put a baby blue tang in my 25 gallon flat back hexagon (24" 15" 16"). After it grows to 3-4 inches. I am going to put it in my 1000 gallon reef. I don't have the reef set up yet so it will be a while before I get a blue tang. My question is can i put him in their until he grows and if he can how long until he grows to that size?

Because you're asking this question I'm going to assume this will be your first saltwater tank. Instead of putting a fish that loves open water swimming in a small tank, spend this time to get your feet wet and learn about taking care of a saltwater aquarium, with appropriate sized fish. If this isn't your first foray into saltwater, I apologize.

And I see this is your first post, so welcome to R2R. Make sure you start a member's tank thread when you do that 1000 gallon.....and start one for the 25 as well. Again, welcome.

Thanks I am glad being here and no this is not my first saltwater tank. My 25 gallon will be at my mom's hospital and a blue tang will be very familiar with kids (dory). I know it will be too small long term but I will provide adequate the swimming space and the diet. My question was how long will it take for a blue tang to grow 3 inches? After it grows that much I will move it to my 1000 gallon reef with a lot of swim room.

I am sorry you got confused, after my 1000 gallon reef is completed then I will get the blue tang. The blue tang will have a home to go to after it gets bigger.

That's not a blue tang. It's a hippo tang

They are known as blue tangs as well.

For the length of time a quarter sized hippo to outgrow the 25 gallon will be very fast. With proper feeding (which it will need being small) it will get to the 3" mark in a year, maybe a tad longer.

I have one that I got in February. It was the size of a dime. In 6 weeks it has grown 50% bigger. Even at its tiny size it uses every inch of the length of my 6 foot tank.
Why not get a clown fish. The tank is much more suitable for Nemo than Dory.

:) I rather see a well taken care of kid in a small house, than the opposite. after all its ur tank, and ur decision

With your plan in place, there is no reason it shouldn't be feasible. Many qt tanks are around that size.

How long it can be kept in that tank will vary, but 6 months approximately is what I would expect.

I think it should be fine.... I had a a small one in a biocube for a bit and it seemed fine.

6 months to grow that size will be great thanks for the replys.

I will be keeping clownfish too, a pair of a regular percula and a picasso. But with a blue tang it will be more like a nemo tank.

I was thinking Caribbean blue tang my bad

I have one and find that once they are getting the correct diet the grow very fast. I got mine as tiny about 2months now and he's no longer tiny.

I would be more concerned with promoting the perception, with the kids and parents, that a 25g is an appropriate home for this species of fish.. Especially with the movie coming soon.

Just my 2 cents.

Never thought about thay. I don't want people to think a 25 gallon us a good home for blue tangs lol.

I also agree with this, as hobbyist we have to educate others when we can. Especially in a public setting where u are planning to put the tank. Which I think is great by the way. I'm sure the kids and adults alike will love it.
