My two blue tangs died today after a water change and some decoration arrangement. They started to lay down on their side quite often, and after a couple of hours, both of them died (I overlooked it because they behaved exactly like when first introduced to the tank two months ago). They are still eating fine to this day) I’m not sure what is going on and am worried because two clown fish look depressed after the tangs pass away.

My water parameter:
Salinity 34
Ammonia 0
Nitrate and Nitrite 0 ( API 5in1 test kits so probably not very accurate )
Temp 81F

You got a pic of the tank?

How old is the tank and did you disturb a sand bed?

Did you use tap water or RODI water?

What size is the tank and what other livestock is in it?

Do the clownfish look depressed or is it possible they actually are sick?

My tank is three months old, and I did disturb the sand bed quite a bit ( the water became very cloudy after that). I used freshwater I got from my local fish store.

I have a 5 gallon tank, and including the tangs there are total of 4 live stock in my aquarium, 2 blue tang and 2 clownfish
If this is correct on the size then that’s the issue. Tangs, even babies cannot survive in such a small aquarium. Five gallons with live rock and sand you’re bringing that five gallons to around two. That’s not very much for four fish, even tangs sadly.

I trying to set up a larger tank for them but it will not be ready until next month, so sad to lose them but hopefully my clown will be healthy until then.

I was joking in my head that this might be a 20g tank so I figured I’d ask. 5g is unacceptable. For any length of time. Doesn’t matter if they all were 1”

Forget about Tang gang it’s too small for the clownfish pair alone

if you want blue tangs in your future I hope the large tank you are planning is 160g +

You need to slow way down and research for a couple months before you do anything else. Not trying to be rude but 4 fish in a five gallon tank and 2 of which are blue tangs that require a 6 foot tank minimum.
Yes. Best to wait and research these animals. Going bone cheap and going fast never work even for a fish only aquarium

Not tang gang everyone should be not necessarily at op but to whoever recommended or sold these fish to op.
I agree entirely. But let's be realistic, if every LFS refused to sell fish to people they knew would probably kill them their profits would tumble and the whole trade could collapse. I don't think there are any easy solutions - at least not yet.

How did you do the waterchanges on the tank? Was the heater exposed? Does the heater have a controller with external probe? What aeration does it have?

4 tangs in a 5 gallon tank???? Either this is a troll post, or sorry but something is wrong with this guy. Please don't buy anymore fish and stay out of the hobby until you do the appropriate research.
No that would be ridiculous.

It was only TWO Blue Tangs and Two friendly clownfish in a tank that’s 5g empty. They had at least 3g of luxurious swimming space after sand and decorations
