Thinking of getting a Male and female Blue throat trigger of the same size off Live Aquaria. I have a 300 gallon 8 footlong tank mixed reef. Do you see any issues as I assume they would not be "paired" up when I purchase but would they get along moving forward?

I have a pair of Blue throats and if you want to see a video of them spawning look at post 119 on my build thread below.

My pair had been in the LFS for a few months before I purchased them (I was reasearching suitability for ages) and at one point they had to be separated as the LFS thought they had been fighting. A domestic so to speak!

However they were then put together, and have been fine ever since and they are a real pair of characters and a very large presence in the tank.

I think if you buy them they could pair up but I suppose it’s a bit of a gamble. But you have a large tank so it’s probably well worth the risk.

I suppose it’s like a blind date!

I watched the videos and that is pretty amazing! I do run a bare bottom tank, any idea if that will that be an issue with the triggers? What do you feed your triggers?

The only problem is if you purchase a female under 4" it may turn out to be an immature male. They seem to bond pretty easily so getting a pre-bonded pair isn't that necessary. But I have seen several cases of the females being males then having 2 males in your tank, which can be problematic. They are carnivores and are not unusually picky eaters, they will appreciate chopped up chunky meaty foods like shrimp, scallop, and squid.

Thank you!

The food is easy in that they will eat normal mysis shrimp type foods, mussels etc., and they also eat sheets of nori seaweed with the Tangs, infact they pretty much eat anything I feed them. Well apart from some special tins of arctic shrimp which they wouldn’t touch!

They like to sleep under my rocks and they dug all the sand out to make a nest and go there at night or when nervous. So if your bare bottom just make sure they can make a cave/hideout somewhere. I believe in the ocean they build nests in the sand and certainly when their getting ready for Spawning they start trying to build one in the sand of my tank! So maybe ‘no sand’ may be an issue with them.

Oh and they will move rockwork if they want to so make sure it’s secure!

I never had a pair but always wanted too..

They are great in a large tank. So much character like was stated. Mine used to squirt water at me thought it funny at first but a real pain latter. They also croak like a frog.

Sounds like those who have them love them. Really leaning towards trying a pair. Does anyone have them in a bare bottom and if so hows it going?

It shouldn't matter... They will need a cave, they like to wedge themselves between rocks. Even though they are not really shy, they do spend a fair amount of time wedge in rocks especially when scared..

They love chopped clams and they will chase small fish. Mine almost ate my chromis, they were really small though and probably would not touch full size ones. . I had to pull them. They really are peaceful with most fish. Mine paired with my rabbitfish.

Do they need hardshell food to help wear their teeth down?
