Hey everyone, I have a Blue throat trigger in QT/Observation for the last couple of weeks. I've dealt with Marine Velvet before and I'm pretty sure that's what I'm dealing with, but never had it look quite like this. Looking for opinions. He's currently in therapeutic levels of Copper. Day 2 of copper. Not breathing rapid and still eating.. Thoughts??? Thanks in advance. For a closer look I have a short video on IG...

That looks like a secondary bacterial infection or possibly viral. Depending on how long in copper and how certain you are it had velvet - either add abx to the mix, watch for aeration. Or discontinue copper and treat with kanaplex-furan-metro. Depending on how well established your biofilter and how quickly you react doing both at the same time is feasible.

Is the trigger eating?

Noticed small spots/dusting 3 days ago and started copper. This is Day 2 of copper at therapeutic level. Woke up this morning to skin sloughing off like in the above pic. Still eating and no labored breathing. I'm not familar with ABX but do have Kanaplex on hand.

Curious - what brand of copper - what's the level - and what test kit?

Cupramine and Seachem copper test. 0.5 Mg/l

The other guys are far more expert than I - but - there are numerous examples of this on R2R with the 'peeling'/'mucus' that people have called velvet. Again - I would ask the #reefsquad - before you added or subtracted anything. Adding medication to copper can be problematic. Hopefully you will get an answer soon - in the mean time - I wouldn't change anything.

EDIT- I see @EmdeReef is already here...

I think it could be a secondary bacterial infection or brook.

I would start with a rally bath, which will help both.

After the bath I would use CP plus furan 2 in a new qt, if CP is available.to you.

+1

Rally bath and transfer to new QT.

CP is the better choice, but If you aren’t able to get CP, you can use metronidazole + furan-2 with copper dosed to the same level as it is currently.

I have Rally on hand and I'm mixing water for a new QT. Can you please describe or link me to instructions on how to do a Rally bath?? Never done that before and would really appreciate it.

You want to use 5ml rally per gallon of bath water. I usually use a 5-gallon bucket. Aerate the bath with an air bubbler, and use a small heater to keep to temp. You want to match temp and salinity between both tanks and the bath so they are the same across the board.

90-minutes in the bath, keep a close eye for signs of distress and so the fish doesn’t get any ideas about jumping out. I cover mine with mesh just in case.

I’ve noticed they will sometimes get kind of quiet and just hangout on the bottom. If you shine a light in or touch them with the airline or net handle they should “wake-up” and swim around. If not, bath-time is over.

FWIW, I’ve very, very rarely had a fish not tolerate a rally bath if done as instructed.

I'm looking at my bottle and it does not list any ingredients. It's made by Ruby Reef and states.... It's good for External parasites, dinoflagellates, marine velvet, gill flukes, clownfish disease, bacterial infections and tail and Fin Rot. That's about the best I can do to answer your question. Maybe others can chime in.

Rally contains acriflavine, aminoacridine and formalin.

Looks like lymphoma

Just an update::: I did the Rally bath and have been treating in copper. Body has completely cleared except for one tiny spot above his eye. Today the Trigger is very active and eating well. Hopefully I saved this guy. Thanks everyone for the help!!!!!

That’s good news! Make sure you have a cover on your tank. If it’s anything like the three I’ve had, it will try to jump out. I’ve lost three to jumping and my last one got out through a little crack in the egg crate that I forgot to close after feeding.

Thanks! I have an Artfully Acrylic lid so everyone is safe. Nothing worse than losing a fish to jumping. Been there done that a few times myself.
