So I have 2 of these blue tuxedos for about 6 months.
Today I was broadcast coral feeding some reefroids
Suddenly one after the other they started secreting thick whitish cloudy stuff from the top their center,
Lasted for about 10 minutes
I took Iphone video, see below

Any one with experience know what is happening???

Looks like you got males. My two urchins (one tuxedo and one Atlantic short spined) are both females and periodically release eggs. It's a pretty cool thing to see in a home tank.

Very cool video. Back in my college days we forced sea urchins to spawn, and fertilized the eggs. Was very interesting at the time, but definitely seems like something PETA would be against :). Lucky no one threw red paint at us.

Interesting. Same thing just happened to me a few minutes ago, thus the reason I googled and came across your post.

I have had this Tuxedo for a Few weeks. He's been eating Coraline like nuts.

I finally got a Fresh Jar of Reef Roids since I ran out before I got the Urchin.
I feed Reef Roids, and passing by noticed a cloud coming off the Tuxedo. Same as in your Video.

I assume this cloudy stuff is Good food for Corals!

Definitely spawning. I have several tuxedo’s.. One releases sperm every couple of weeks. Another releases eggs once a month or so. Sadly they do these things out of synch.

My solitary pink urchin (looks like pincushion) did something similar a couple of weeks ago but it was thicker. (Not the normal, little, round excrement coming out of the top center of the urchin).

At first, I thought a chunk of fresh shrimp I had fed to my starfish had gotten blended in the powerhead but then noticed it was coming from the urchin.

Just came across this thread after searching “tuxedo urchin spawning”. Very interesting as exactly the same thing happened to me after feeding reef roids!

Although i have two tuxedos and only one seemed to do anything. And it was more of a light white dusting that it gave off rather than the thicker stuff in your video. Not sure if that means this one is male or female.

Funny that I just now came across this after my urchin started spewing out white stuff immediately after I fed reef roids. Must be something in the roids that either stresses them out or gets them going!
