Bluespot Jawfish... PetCo... yeah.. that bad.

I have looked everywhere online for one and can't find it better than PetCo's 95.99 price. I shutter when I get fish from petco. I am in Pittsburgh PA so my only options are expensive and over the top should be put out of business expensive. Any suggestions as to a retailer or even better, wholesaler that can at least match that price?

id try a LFS honestly, we get bluespot jawfish all the time and usually have them priced 69.99-89.99 depending on size.

Is it worth saving when the odds of fish dying are so much higher? I agree that most online vendors are way overpriced but would recommend that over petco or Lfs if possible is best option.

I know not all fish stores are equal so ill give it that much but our store quarantines all our fish and makes sure they are healthy and eating before even being introduced to the public for purchase. i see it as an added insurance when i can see the specimen and how it acts and feeds.

That is a very good price! But here in Pittsburgh we have 2 dedicated fish stores. One on the north side of the city and the other on the south side. It takes me 35 minutes to get to the south and an hour and a half to get to the north. Both of which do not have the fish in stock right now. At this point im weighing my options. I have a tank specifically set up for the jawfish. Spot fed everyday with only him in the tank. I even constructed him an underground PVC maze! Just need to find HIM.

Being in pittsburgh has nothing to do with the high price. You say petco is the cheapest but for one its sold out and normally 119$ plus you add shipping you are priced right were you would find one locally, look at live aquaria, bluezoo, all the same prices plus or minus 10$. The fish have gotten more expensive and while everyone looks for a deal if you are more sold on getting the cheapest fish you should just stop looking because cheap usually equals lower quality most of the time.

I am biased because I own a store, but being able to pickup this fish locally says something because you can observe them since they vary so widely personality wise

I totally agree that id rather see the fish before purchasing it. There is a guy that lives about 2 hours away from me that has a small shop out of his home. I contacted him and he said that he would price match it. Yes it is 30 dollars in gas but if it's the only bluespot jawfish in a 200 mile radius im willing to travel. Aside from that, he is also a sponsor for our local fish club.

$30 in gas? You might as well pay $5 more for shipping and get one from LiveAquaria that has been quarantined and comes with a 2 week guarantee. The slight difference in pricing makes a world's difference in quality. What's the point in saving a few bucks for a fish that might die? Then you're short $100 some dollars just because of the slight difference in pricing. If anything happened to the BSJ if you purchased from LiveAquaria, you can bet that they'd do something about it. I've had only great experiences with them and that's the only place I'm going to try a BSJ again after a failed attempt from getting one at my LFS. Reading articles, Kevin of LiveAquaria said that it wasn't the temperature that was the biggest issue. Rather, it's how BSJ are handled when caught and shipped. They're very susceptible to disease and stress during those phases, and LiveAquaria would have to go through all those troubles in the beginning so the chances of it being a good specimen is greatly increased if you buy through LiveAquaria.

But in the end, it's up to your choice. I'm just waiting to see what else I can get from LiveAquaria to get free shipping, hehe.

Make sure you have a very tight fitting lid. I had one escape out of the tiniest hole where my powerheads' cords were routed out of the tank. I couldn't believe it when I found him dried up next to the tank! They hole was about 3/4" diameter and it had two cords routed through it.
