I read in the latest Coral magazine about Bommies. It's new to me, and I am confused on exactly what it is and what it does.. lol. Intrigued to learn more.

Anyone doing Bommies? I am interested in seeing photos and your experience on it!

In terms of an aquarium, they just mean a place in the tank where the rocks are built up very close to the surface to create a particular look. Mostly aesthetic, imo.

A bommie in the wild is a small isolated sort of reeflet. It's attractive to marine life because it might be, for instance, all by itself in the middle of a plain of sand or mud.

I think the goal is to duplicate that effect in the aquarium. Some of those I've seen have been viewable from all - or most - sides.

Another word you could use is 'minimalist reef'. Often times people post them as that rather than bommie. That said, i'm a big fan!

This has been done by some people long time ago, google sunny'x rimless reef , he started this trend in 2009 if I remember correctly, here couple of pictures of his tanks.

Actually I think the trend in aquascaping has moved towards Bommies...you tend to see them more now than the wall of rock that used to be the norm.

I have two islands, but one is more of a C shaped wall. the other smaller one is also kind of straight, but I am waiting for my tank to cycle before I can add the LR from my old tank in (not ready to break down the old tank yet). Then I will make the smaller one more of an island. I like the look a lot, it has more personality than a single wall of rocks
