Books and other info sources

Hi r2r community,

What are the most highly recommended books, websites, and other sources of info for the person just getting started in saltwater tank? I intend to keep a small reef and eventually upgrade to a larger tank.

I used to work for TFH publications so I'm familiar with most of their books and the Microcosmos books but since I didn't work on the fish books I'm not sure which ones of those are held in high regard. I'm also interested in any other sources of good information.

It been a while that I picked up a marine/reef book.
I'm pretty sure we here at R2R can help you successfully acomplish a great reef tank.

^^ agreed. If I were to show anybody a resource for learning about this hobby (oh wait, I do that almost every day ) I would give them R2R. This is the best place to learn and ask questions.

Tony Vargas has a couple books I believe.

The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robert Fenner
The Reef Tank volume I, II, III Charles Delbeek and Julian Sprung. Some of it's dated but the basics still apply

Thanks for directing me to those resources. I like books, so I tend to think of them as info sources first. I guess it comes from years of being in publishing. I might have the Fenner book.

I'm mostly looking for info on how to get set up, what equipment is needed (and what are good optionals), and maintenance. I want to eventually work up to a reef that can support SPS and Tridacna but I know I'm years away from that. I'm getting a small tank in the late summer/fall that will house a few fish, zoas, and a soft coral or two. I've kept freshwater (though not in a long time) and have been successful with just about every other type of pet I've kept. I've just never had a marine tank and I feel a bit daunted.

What do you think of the Marine Aquarium Handbook by Martin Moe? Is Borneman's coral book still well liked?

One I like is The Marine Reef Aquarium by Philip Hunt. Make sure you understand biological filtration nd how to be sure a tank is cycled. And don't be in too much of a rush to add inhabitants. And select inhabitants that are more appropriate for you size tank, and corals you may want to keep.
