Has anyone every just gotten bored with their tank and thought about just redoing. I mean instead of spending a ton of money on upgrading (considering i already have a 220 gallon) just redoing your current set up to eliminate some of the mistakes you made the first time. I have heard of people completely changing their aquascape every year just give themselves something new to look at. What do you guys think?

Zeal i am really tempted to completely redo my aqua scape and try to organize everything better. Especially my wires running everything.

id love to do that but I DONT want to mess up anything or stir the sand bed up too much

The sand bed is the only thing i am worried about but like I said before i know people who do it every year and they don't ever seem to have a problem.

Unless your sand is more than 3-4 inches deep I wouldn’t worry about it. You can take everything out, rinse the sand nice and clean (or even replace it if you want) redo your rocks and get rolling again quickly. Just don’t let the rocks sit out of water.

Yes, totally normal and a good idea most times. If you are bored with the tank then you will eventually stop maintaining it properly. With the sand you can either siphon it out slowly over a few weeks or just remove everything else, put them in a temp holding tank, and clean it all out.

And maybe get a fancy new sump while you’re at it? :D

No need if he is happy with what he has. It's about being happy with your current setup or you will not enjoy it. I've personally ran many great systems with a DIY sump glass tank and siliconeed in glass baffles.

I’ve rearranged my aquascape several times. I’m never really completely happy with it. And I agree with mixer911 - stuff like that keeps you interested and invested (mentally) and you’re probably better with the upkeep than if you were to get bored with it.

Yep, done it many times, sometimes it's just what the doctor ordered, and you can find a new found enthusiasm. Give away or in to your fav lfs things you just don't care for anymore, fish and corals. Revamp the scape and restock into a new image. Or you might end up like what I did once, and have 7 tanks.

I've had the itch to rebuild for a while. Like you said, things that I wish I would have done. So I finally did it today. I made a rebuild thread, haven't updated it after getting it started back up this afternoon.

I am kinda, really hate my Nuvo 40G. I wish I did more research from day 1 and not have gotten a AIO.... oh and my aquascape I dont like

I started with that tank. It made me nuts, but in the end I learned a lot from it. First and foremost, do my research before buying[emoji12] For the next 2 years I did. Changed my scape a dozen times. Put sand in, took sand out, tried bare bottom, put sand back in, bought cheap light, saved money to by a good light, etc..

Try not to hate it. Consider it a stepping stone to your next one. I now have a Reefer 425xl. Still learning...that’s one of the things I love about this hobby. There is always something new to learn and a lot of great people to meet along the way[emoji4]

Depending on your corals, how well they are attached to the rocks, encrusted and growth it can be a lot of work. Between being a little bored, short of money and some health issues I did very little maintenance for almost a year on my 300 gallon system. I was contemplating tearing it down. My monti caps had over grown the tank and some of my corals. Because of letting things get out of wack I lost all my acros but looks like all my LPS will survive. It is bare bottom so I did not have to worry about sand. It ended up going through a cycle and now I have to get everything back in balance. I will be buying new frags as I had no problem growing small frags into large colonies. Figure it will be at least a month before I buy more corals. I am now back to looking forward to adding corals. So yes making changes can break the boredom.

I usually run what I call a ‘hurricane session’ on most tanks about every 2 years. It makes clients happy because it’s a new look, and it helps me manage corals and remove any fish that have become problematic.

The typical protocol is to pump 90% of the water into bins, and place corals and fish in them. Then I pull whatever rock doesn’t have much or anything growing on it out and place it on a tarp so I can see what I have and start to map out the aquascape in my mind.

Then, I shift and stir the sand bed up, and then once whatever junk is in the sand is in suspension, I push the sand as far over to the corner as I can. I then pump the remaining 10% of the water with all of the crap out.

Spread the sand back out, lay down what I can of the aquascape, and then fill the tank back up with the saved water, adding coral as I go (a lot of times I’ll place them on the bottom until the tank is filled and I’m ready to start placing them).

Refresh the carbon and some Purigen, plug it back in and it’s like nothing happened.

There is almost always a noticeable uptick with the corals afterward.

Several years ago I upsized from a 90 bow front that was a pain to maintain to a 190 gallon. Great move but now my sps are mature colonies and constantly in need of fragging. Itch has begun to setup a Red Sea peninsula for only high end sps.... It never gets boring

Sure why not? If you swap the rock, just dont swap it all at once.Mini cycles do happen when u re-aquascape, so best to minimize that when possible.

After all the years of being in this hobby I didn’t know this was possible without starting another cycle. My tank is overgrown and loaded with crap. I’m thinking of trying this. How much rock can I change at one time and can it be dry rock?
