I purchased this garf bonsai about 6 months ago, it was all blue and about 1 inch. It turned brown pretty quickly after I purchased it but has continued to grow. I dont understand why the bottom half continues to stay brown.

Tank is a Cadlights 70
Lighting is a kessil ap700 12hrs on 12hrs off
Flow is 2x MP10 alternating

I run a ZeoVit system

Alk 7.7
Mag 1335
Calc 500
Phospahtes .10
Nitrates less than 5
Nitrites 0
Ammonia 0
Salinity 1.025
Temp 78.4

Nitrates, ammonia, nitrates, calcium and such. That was supposed to be water, not alter. danged autocorrect.

Some of moments have down that. Some color up all over , some only get color with the new growths.

IMO , it could be form just not quite enough light and higher nutints. But I think it’s Light.

Your phosphates are a bit high, try getting them down to .06 or lower. Not bad looking at all though!
I agree they are high. Use to be .26 and I have been slowly bringing them down and will continue to bring them down. There was no brown when I got it so I am bummed out.

What makes you think its the light? My light peaks at 90% and this piece is at the highest point in the tank. I do have the kessil light filters attached also. When you say high nutrients are you referring to my phosphates?

I'd just continue to slowly bring down phosphates and keep at it, if it's growing and has some color, give it more time. I have the opposite problem right now, great color and very slow growth under kessil a350w.

Both no3 and Po4.

I have a half dozen or more Vileda frags in two differentl tanks at different depths and placements. Some will grow and color up just at the new growth tips. Some will color. Up all over. The ones that color up all over have the best coverage and a higher par.
The ones with the best light will also branch like crazy and not just send shoots out.

What’s the par on the acro?

I don’t have access to a par meter so I have no idea.

I agree, it's pretty typical for valida to have slightly different color at the tips or new growth. However, high PO4 has been a known culprit for browning corals. It doesn't really look bad at all though? I think if you get can get your phos down a little it should be just fine.

My garf always did best in medium lighting (200-250) par, but I'm sure it would stay colored at a higher par with the appropriate nutrients.
