Hi all,

I haven't had a tank set up for over ten years now. My last system was a 260 litre fish only set up.

I had a beautiful Clown Trigger, who was about 6 to 7 inches. He was the last fish in along with my other stock of a Regal Tang (similar size to the trigger), Yellow Tang, Valentino Puffer, a pair of Percula Clownfish and a Hovercraft Boxfish.

They all got along fine for many years and apart from the odd show of aggression between 'Krusty' the Clown Trigger and 'Ronnie' the Regal Tang (named by my daughter), I had no problems. That was until one day I spotted 'Horace' the Hovercraft fish on the bottom of the tank, which was highly unusual because he was usually always 'hovering' about like a helicopter all over the tank. It turned out that the Trigger had nipped his underbelly damaging his swim bladder and he could not maintain his usual 'flights' around the tank. He died shortly after, followed by the rest of my stock over the next few weeks. At the time I was not aware of the fact that the Boxfish could secrete a toxic poison when stressed but this was obviously what subsequently wiped out my livestock. I did sort the system out at the time and re-stocked but had to take the tank down when due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to look after it properly. My good friends at my local aquatics dealer took the system down for me and 're-housed' the fish.

I am now in the process of setting up a reef tank and have purchased a Reefer 525 XL for this purpose. I have never kept corals and invertebrates before, so I am researching as I gather together all the equipment I need.

I have read that Boxfish are not reef compatible, although I have seen plenty of videos of reef tanks that have them in there.

Have any of you guys kept a Boxfish in a reef tank and if so what is your experience and have you had any problems?

Thanks, Kev Ev

I think the incompatibility depends on what type of reef tank. I believe the biggest issue is the flow since these fish cannot navigate overly turbulent waters. If you set up a lagoon style tank, I can't see why you cannot make it work.

I think a lot of people don't try it as well given many prized coral collections are not worth the risk of a single fish nuking their tank. Food for thought!
