Im experiencing really bad cyanobacteria and others recommend dosing chemiclean.. Your thoughts?

Tank Info:

-100G total water volume (60x24x12 tank)
-barebottom
-35 lbs real reef live rocks and tonga branches
-Marinepure blocks 8x8x4- x2
-Vertex Omega 150 (cup and body thoroughly cleaned every Sat)
-4" 200 micron filter sock changed every Wed and Sun
-1/4 cup BRS high capacity gfo and 1/2 cup of BRS Rox carbon mixed in BRS deluxe reactor changed every two weeks
-MP40wES and Gyre XF150 for flow
-10gallon weekly water change
-Mixed reef with CUC crew
-Fish are fed once/day

Tested my Nitrate (API) and Phosphate (Hanna Low Range) and they are both zero.. 4-stage RO/DI TDS meter is also zero.
Tank has been setup since Nov 2014. It's all over the rocks and coral plugs argg!!!

Thank you for your help! :)

It is generally safe, but toxins can also come from the dead cyano, so manually remove as much as possible before using antibiotics such as this.

Also, it may grow back if you do not export more nutrients, including those from dead cyano.

Yes Chemiclean is safe for reef tanks. I have used it in the past without any ill effects from the chemiclean itself and the cyano was gone in 48 hours. However, this will make your skimmer go nuts and will deplete oxygen from the tank. In my case the skimmer overflowed for about 3 weeks. I performed what amounted to 70% water change over those three weeks until the skimmer returned to normal operation. You have to have some sort of aeration going during the treatment so I would take off your skimmer cup or just let it overflow into the sump. In my experience, I take out the carbon (you have to anyway) but leave GFO running and my skimmer cup on. In the future I will do larger water changes right after I see the cyano disappear to get my skimmer back in action sooner.

Good luck

Just make sure you dose the actual amount on it too. I don't have personal experience with it, but I have heard if you over dose it you can cause more issues with the tank. As stated above, your skimmer will go absolutely berserk . Follow the instructions with the water changes as well and you should be good.

I had problems with cyano on a 15 year old reef and tried all the methods for removal and nothing worked so I gave In and used this product and It worked and no Ill effects. Been over 2 months and no outbreak. You can remove skimmer collection cup and run skimmer for aeration.

I used it last month and it worked great. I went away for the holidays and my tank got a bad cyano problem, but this fixed it fast. If you have a protein skimmer don't worry about an air stone, you'll have plenty of 02.

Open the windows of your house for a while to let fresh air in, too! You want oxygen in the tank while treating!
