Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

So, I guess these things are a big deal with teenagers now. I've been meaning to post about them because of the sea-turtle and evironment issues. We recently bought a bunch of these for Kyla (the 17 year old). They are washable, reusable straws that come in a carry case. They straw part is made of rubber and stainless steel. As you can see in the pics, the straw part collapses to be inserted in the carry case. They are available in a bunch of different colors. Pretty good idea if you ask me.

Additionally, I think they could make a decent weapon to stick into someone's eye or throat!

Am I correct to look toward things opposite on the color wheel?
Yes. Look on the right side for different combinations too. Complimentary and Split Comllimentary are where I would look. Especially with Zoas.

I really shouldn't post questions and then fall asleep ;Sorry

My thoughts - I tried a frag section in my 40B sump on my 140. I had a real hard time keeping it clean enough and generally just became useless for frags. Also, the light I used was an Evergrow LED and within a year, the lamp had severe corrosion, even though there really wasn't any splash getting to where it was. I would suggest a remote frag system, if at all possible.

This is the set up of a friend of mine and he just added a (Advanced Acrylics) remote frag tank this weekend. I thought it came out great and is definitely not an eyesore. NOTE: There isn't a lot of growth in the tank yet, since it is only 4 months old.

Have you ever considered using an algae turf scrubber instead of a small refugium? I have a dry Turbo Aquatics scrubber, so I can't recommend that from personal experience, but a friend has the Clearview Scrubber from BRS and he loves it. I think you would get better results in such a small space.

I am one of those that believes the larger the better for refugiums. I had great luck with one on my 75, but it was a 30 gallon refugium that was chock full of macro algae. You can see the green growth in the DIY refugium behind my sump on my 75 in the photo. It sat on a pedestal between the back of the tank and the wall. There was zero algae in my display.

This was my 40B sump that I built. The frag section was on the far right side. I did not use a refugium on this tank.
It may look good, but turned into a death pit for frags.

You can see the frag section (with adjustable shelving) on the right. Not shown in this pic was the MP-10, so it had plenty of flow and light.

Hey @Fin Thanks for stepping up with a detailed response. The frag section is something I wanted because I just don't have room for a dedicated frag tank even with a fish room. I can't expand the fish room and with water change storage, QT tank setups and equipment and RODI filter setup the room is pretty much full. There will be a couple of advantages to mine over yours though I hope. The entire sump is sitting on a shelf and not under a stand so it will be very easy to maintain. And the water depth will be around 8-9" which should vastly help with maintenance as well.

As for the fuge, I had considered an ATS and I might still implement one. I just don't know enough about there placement and running them TBH. Fuges I've run before with great success although my last one was very large (7 Gallons on a 45 Gallon system). I guess it's just a comfort thing as I already know how to run one with success, although with the current plan the fuge is only 13ish Gallons so it would be much smaller volume to tank volume wise.

I can see why you got the reefing urge again, your friend has a wonderful setup. I do wish I had the room for a dedicated frag setup and one day I might but the near future does not bode well for that. Artfully acrylic makes some beautiful stuff and I wish I had the room for one of those frag tanks.

LOL, one kid’s straw is another man’s weapon. Actually pretty cool. Hey, I can think of something else we might use that for. Hmmmm.....

LOL, come on folks, let step this up. We should be having ten pages a day. I guess because it is August, we are slacking.

NO not ten pages a day! I have a hard enough time playing catch up with the 2-4 pages you maniacs run up each night!
