Mine liked caves and swim thrus. They swam in and out a lot, the more hiding places you make, the more they will stay out in the open. They feel like they have a place to go if SHTF.

Same here all of my angels like to swim in and out of caves. They really likes hiding places.
now that the emperor is getting huge , he still likes to hide in large caves. also he needs a lot of open space, so best aquascape should have both many caves of different sizes and open space

also @Katrina71 you will need open space for the tang

My tomini tang only bullies up to fish his own size... the smaller ones are ignored.

Acrylic tubing came yesterday. Now to play with some vertical rock structure. I'm thinking 18" at the tallest? That allows 6" probably 5" for the true waterline.

Make sure not to go too tall, you will/can block out the light and make shadowing an issue in the lower 1/2 of the water column. My first scape was like that...looked great without water and then I had an issue with one of the rocks staying level and standing up, that turned out t o be a blessing in disguise. I couldn't/wouldn't have lived with that scape and definitely would have torn it down to redo it all.

Baby Dory loves to cruise around the rocks in the office tank and isn't aggressive towards any fish in the tank.
Get a baby tang and it will grow up with your current established fish and will get in where it fits in instead of ruling the reef from day one.

Had a bunch of swim thrus and cave areas to split the tank front/back etc but it was too tall.
Gotta think long term and picture what you want it to look like all grown out and think of where the rock should be for it to grow out from...think lower.
I'd say go no higher than 60% of the tank height.
You can still do a really cool scape with swim thrus and caves etc.
Mine turned out pretty good in a rush, I was filling the tank and it wasn't stable so I laid most of the tall ones on their sides and it worked.
I'd also advise making multiple "smaller" structures instead of making one giant rock or connecting them all together in case you need to do maintenance or move things to get something in/out of the tank.
I almost made that mistake with that scape I pictured here.
I ended up leaving it so I could connect them in tank and since they went on their sides and not together they ended up making great individual structures on their own and my basslet lives under one of the structures and the blenny eats GHA off one of the other ones in the back of the tank exclusively and the clowns stay up by the toadstool and the smallest rock structure.
This was the previous layout before I laid it all on it's side individually.

Honestly I don't know why it's not a thing now, we spend SO much money on these systems and really your sump is the heart and soul of your tank. Why can't it be a beautiful thing too and not something you hide away where no one can see? Heck we sometimes spend as much time in our sumps or more than we do in our displays, so wheres the pride in all that?

Oh yeah well look at this nonsense, atleast it's going up lol
