Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

So first chamber can have a sock, and I would leave it at least 7 or 8” wide to accommodate a larger skimmer if you needed to. Maybe he could make an adjustable baffle going into chamber two also to accommodate different skimmers. Chamber two for refugium make it as big as you can while still leaving 6 or 7” for return pump in the last chamber. Make the sump about 16” tall and baffles around 8” at max to allow plenty of room for back flow during power outages.

Somebody had to start lol

What is wrong with you Yankees? Everybody knows Ranch is for potatoes!
Squirts mustard missing @dantimdad and covering @Katrina71
I had that coming!
It looks good katrina!
Do NOT waste beer!
Holy crap, out of it for 2 hours and we have a weird mix of food fights, waster beer
So what did I miss ?
There's always one kid that claims to have been in the bathroom the whole time...

Ok Back to our regularly scheduled programming!
I noticed in my flurry to Ketchup;) everyone was contemplating "to fuge or not to fuge" WELL I just so happen to RIP MY FUGE OUT last night. In the 2+ years of this tank, I have never had so many issues with organics.
Partial blame is on me for not spending enough(constant) time on the system. I want a display to enjoy, not to spend every extra moment working on it, and if I miss a week everything should not go to $#!+
Katrina you and your son have plenty of time to tinker and maintain the tanks So it could PROVE advantageous to harbor that other dimension to Reef keeping, but for me Im going back to live rock gravel/media in the sump.

BTW I never thought much about algae scrubbers or chaeto reactors until recently, but I now see the allure of containing that trash in isolation. Now if you really want to know how I feel :p

I'm still fairly new, within my first two years in reefing. So I have a hard time saying before or after fuge for the skimer out of lack of experience. My 90's sump is kind of different, when the water flows in its split between the fuge and the skimmer area and then all gathers back up in the return. That's a prebuilt sump from eshopps though and were not looking at anything that complicated for this. I just built a sump form my frag tank and it will be refugium first, but mostly that's me wanting to try something different. So short answer is I don't know which first, if you listen to triton then fuge first if you list to conventional wisdom then skimmer first.

Opinions?
WEELLLL , My skimmer is after ////was after the fuge and I was constantly getting chaeto strands in the needle wheel. So instead of emptying the cup weekly I was tearing down my skimmer twice a month. So a filter barrier would be advised if you go that route.

I didn't even think about that, when I did my frag tank sump. Of course right now I don't even have a skimmer for my frag tank, still debating if I'm even going to need or want one in it.

I think I'd prefer my skimmer after there fuge? I have a small bioload.
I have a question to add to this. Does oxygenation enhance the fuges ability to process organics? Triton ( TREND?FAD) requires a 10x turnover and Would require skimming to catch whats missed due to that turnover.
It Just seems counter intuitive, Not that I will have to worry about such things:rolleyes:

I am here just checking the design discussion and ducking the responsibility! It is almost like watching a husband and wife discuss what color they want for their counters. I offer over 140 some colors over 2 product ranges. The wise husband throws up his hands and says it your kitchen dear you pick.

Buy the way the 9004 is a magnet mount so you can use a deeper and wider chamber to allow for a bigger skimmer in the future. I love the Tunze skimmers and currently have 3 of them. Currently running a 9001 on my 40 gallon holding tank. Been running for about 15 years with no problems. Hope to do a build on my new Aquamaxx 64 gallon as soon as the office gets its HVAC done. Might be all Tunze without a sump to start.
