Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

Yesterday I copied @Hemmdog and bought a 40B from petco.
This will be for my soon to be 9 year old daughter.
I just can't decide whether to run my HOB skimmer or drill it and buy overflow and plumb it to a 20 gallon tall sump, that was going to be her DT.

@saf1 I have a CPR bak pak I was given for free, needs a pump. Are there any mods for the CPR bak pak? What media should be ran in it and where? Do I run the heater in it too? I swear I saw somewhere a video or thread of someone running an air stone in there's to help it boost the fine micro bubbles needed to skim? Is the MJ1200 the correct pump?

Try this out:

I have a tunze nano skimmer that had the same issue. I was able to drastically increase tiny bubble production to improve skimming performance by installing a small ball valve on the air line. Anyone who thinks i’m on crack, put one on your skimmer’s air line, close it about half way or more and watch the bubble production. What’s happening is the restriction causes the air inlet side of pump to drop in pressure. This increases the velocity and the turbulence of the air bubbles that are able to come through the restriction to impact the impeller. The result is a steady stream of tumbling, high speed bubbles that crash into the skimmer impeller, breaking those otherwise larger, less efficient bubbles into tinier ones. The same theory holds true for automotive fuel atomization, except the spinning impeller is replaced by intake runners and a sudden U-turn around open intake valves.

Pics or it didn't happen. Lol

Mine was using the original pump. It is from Accela - I do not know what model though I am sorry. The label is not legible :( But it has held up pretty well.

Also to all - sorry for that original reply. No idea why it is bold or blue.

One of my stock Accela pumps broke after 4 months. I replaced both dual returns with MJ1200s.

I think the original bak pak had a similar device on the end. I don't have it though but I seem to recall it being there and doing just want you said.

I think that would work - I think those are what I used when I upgraded my bio cube's return pump. They look like the same size. My MJ1200's though had the purple tips on the inside - the blades - and they broke. Had to get a replacement. Just a bad batch I think that I got caught up in.

You mean this one?

These are the suckers I use. They seem to be easier to dial in.

“Two Little Fishies Airline Control Ball Valves are the easiest to use valves on the market for air flow control. Many cheaper control valves will start to leak air, or have minimal control of air flow. The Two Little Fishies Ball Valves give you precise control, letting you fine tune the amount of air traveling to your air stone, skimmer, or ozone generator.”

Yes on the image. And the 2nd one you have I bet is a lot easier :)

I'm going to try this with my seaclone point of sale

There are probably some of you brilliant guys on a no-fly list. ;)
Well.. I’m not allowed to go to Canada for 6 more years... :(lol

I bet it’ll work better. I firmly believe most skimmer air inlet hoses are oversized, especially on large skimmers.
I think I may try that on my reef octo air hose. I had issues with it overflowing before.
