Well its always about the budget:mad:. But if he really does enjoy picture taking, I recommend mirrorless cameras or 4/3 cameras. Its the step up from the point and shoots and not quite a dslr.
It gives the feel of being a real photographer because you can switch lenses. but its smaller and compact. thats really the big difference. same sensors same mega pixels etc.
When I was teaching that was the usual recommended. A dslr is bulky . the mirrorless you can put the small lens on and put it in a pack or purse or bag. then slap the big lens on for sports nature and such.
On a quick search i didn't find any super deals on a kit with a couple lenses. (A short zoom and a long zoom). Naturally as I look there area lot of DSLR kits out there for a deal.
Me, I stalk the clearance sections. last years model or older are still more than most folks need.

I guess "big boy camera" would be an apt description. Its why most recommend dslr even though the big boys don't use those as much as they used to. Boys like toys.
its always hard to guage interest. If he's of the right mindset a dlsr might be fine . might want do a walk through at the store and see what he gravitates too.
Not sure I ever really had one.
