I'm a Conductor/RCLS Operator at Canadian Pacific Railway, I work night shifts in the yard here in Calgary.

I could say the same for my situation. It is not so bad. Always been this way for thirty years, but it is rougher now than when I was 30yo.

How did you get into what you do? That seems like a pretty small market to get into isn’t it? Your job seems so cool.

No clue tbh. I’ll have to ask him. I can tell you it was somewhere in Washington state lol

Yes. There are probably less than 100 Technical Directors who do live, national newscasts. Many more who do sports and there is a lot of overlap between the two genres. I have done both.

As far as how I got into it, it was like a stream of consciousness throughout my career. My first real job in sports was totally random. I sent a resume cold to Madison Square Garden when I was 24. The person who received it called me and said he just had to let someone go that day for stealing equipment (LOL). He needed someone immediately and I got the job. That opened huge doors for me.

Luckily in Calgary we don't get an insane amount of snow or these RCLS units might be in trouble, on the road through the mountains you can easily plow through a foot or two of snow on any night in the winter months. However snow and trains don't mix very well so it's usually cleared before it gets over 6 inches.

Personally I've driven through a 3 foot snow bank with one, I've also driven through an ice packed paved parking lot our rails go through and ended up lifting the unit off the rails lol had to back up and pray it would go back on, which it did. Needless to say that customer didn't get service for a while.

Lol they do have plows on them, unfortunately they still sit 2 inches above the rails so they don't catch on heaved crossings and such. We are instructed to take extreme caution when working with snow and ice over the rails for the reasons I mentioned above.

We are also not allowed to drive through water 3 inches above the rails without being instructed to in emergency situations.

They are VERY powerful machines but a lot of people forget they actually run off electricity. Between each wheel set on locomotives is a massive electric traction motor. When fully revved up they run around 12-1400 Amps, water and snow don't play well with that kind of power.
