@LadyMac, I just emptied my Reefer250 and will be setting it up as a freshwater planted/amazon blackwater tank... my apistos are getting an upgrade! What substrate do you recommend so I can go ahead get it cycling?

I personally love black beauty blasting sand. It’s inert so you can add ferts under for rooted plants. If you’re planning a carpet then Saf T Sorb is a great clay based sub. Both will have to be rinsed very well though.

I used to have a bag of black diamond blasting sand.... gave it to a friend. I was thinking of using the ADA amazon soil...

That’s a good substrate too. Really whatever you Lomé the look of is what would be good.

Cool, I have the caribsea eco complete in their tank now, and it feels more like rock than soil. Not impressed with it, that's why I was wanting to switch it up.

I like eco complete well enough but I prefer the black beauty blasting sand over it. I can’t remember but the EC has that packet like their live sand. I wouldn’t consider it nutrient rich for rooted plants and many people have to supplement. I think since the grain sizes are from fine to course is why it’s a good planted sub.

It's just volcanic soil. Has no nutrients or really anything useable by the plants. They claim to have all kinds of minerals that are beneficial but it's just like saying you can breathe sand... I mean, its SiO2. Theres two whole oxygen molecules there, why cant you breathe it?
