Brand new to the dslr game with a question. I just picked up a Nikon d3400 two lens kit. I borrowed a friends Nikon 105mm macro, and the camera says "incompatable lens". I think it has something to do with the AF motors in the lense versus, in the body, or something along those lines.
Could someone please tell me the difference and exactly what lense I would need to get to work with my camera? I would probably get a sigma or tamron to start with.

Thanks for any help I could get

Different methods of driving the motor. Some lenses have an internal servo powered by electrical contacts. Some have a motor driven gear on the camera. Higher end models come with both.

You should be able to turn the AF off and use the lens.
If not , look in the menus to see if theirs option to do it.

Search manual focus lenses Nikon on the google for more info too.

I got the same camera and the 50 mm lens does great with most macro shots that I have tried. Other than that I found a list on nikons website when I got my camera over the summer that told you what lenses were compatible with what cameras... I will try to find that list for you again.

Thank you Sir. I did find that info on Nikon's website. I am also curious about the tokina 100mm macro , but I am not sure if it will work with my cam.
The tokina is around $300 where as the Nikon is $850(ouch) lol.
thank you for your time

It looks like it will work and that company has a pretty decent return policy so I would probably go for it and if it doesn't work you can always return it.

I just know that I really have no need for any other lens at the moment mine takes awesome photos.

The tokina is a nice lens.

Yes, it appears to have great reviews, but I am still not sure if it will work with my d3400? I wish I knew more about this stuff///lol. But, I guess everyone started at the beginning, right?

Thanks for everyones input. I took the camera and nikon 105mm to the local Dodd camera store and was content with purchasing the tamron 90mm from them, but the girl working there got me all set up with the 105 nikon. Had to update firmware, place in manual mode, turn off AF on lens and change aperature ring on lens. But it works like a champ. I just have to manual focus. Now, to try and get some good pics to post.
Thanks again for the input. Looks like saltyfilmfolks was on the right track with the first reply
