Brand New to the SW fun

Got our tank filled, live rock placed from a previous tank, let the filter run for 24 hours bought a damsel & it died. Cloudy water now, and we cannot remove the carcass without taking out the rock. I'm sure this will do a number on our new tank. Any help/suggestions/pointers?

Agree. Leave the fishy in there, it will help cycle the tank for you. Then once the cycle is complete, there shouldn't be anything left, or if there is, your new Clean Up Crew, Snails, Hermits and such, will clean it up for you in a hurry.

How long should I wait to add anything else? Should a CUC be my first addition?

It sounds like you got some fresh live rock which will have a cycle period. The time it take depends on a lot of factors. I would think 3-4 weeks it will have completed the cycle. The best thing to do is check the water and be patient. I would avoid the damsels due to how aggressive they can be especially in that size tank.

+1 on just leave it in there. Really adding a dead piece of shrimp and live rock are the best way to cycle the tank. Now the damsel will just take the place of the shrimp.

Have you tested for Ammonia, Nitrates, and Nitrite?

Welcome to R2R. Looks like a nice setup. Follow all the above. I would recommend letting it do its thing..

I would test the water daily for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. First you'll see a spike in ammonia, then it will go down to 0 and your nitrites will go up. The nitrites will go down when you start getting nitrates. The cycle will be complete when you have zero ammonia and nitrites. The nitrates may be high by then, and you'll bring them down by doing a water change. The whole process may take weeks, but it's worth it to wait until it's completed. While it's cycling, I'd read a book on marine aquariums. Martin Moe has a handbook that's excellent for beginners. And ask a lot of questions here. Good luck!

Welcome to R2R!!

Can you give us some more info on the tank setup and what equipment you are running? Also, from the looks of it, I think you may want to add a power head or two. This will help the flow of the water in the tank and help prevent dead spots. Good luck with your journey!!

We have a power head and a cascade 700 filter. Also found out tank is roughly 40 gal. So new to this! Help!!! Thank you all!!!
