Hey, my name is Tyler! I have always wanted a saltwater tank and I just set one up for the first time. I bought an aquatop 21g biotope w LED lighting and a protein skimmer. I honestly am taking things one step at a time. So far I've placed 21 lbs of rock (1/2 live, 1/2 dry) along with API QuickStart. I plan on leaving it for a few days and testing to see where I'm at. Hopefully I have done everything right. May have a few questions here soon :)

Welcome to the forum!

Give it at least a few weeks. There may be die-off from the live rock which may make the cycle last longer. In my past smaller tanks, I used live rock and saw very little cycles. You'll get diatoms in the sand due to it being a new tank, that is normal. They will then come to pass a week or 2 after that.

Good luck :)

Congrats! I started with in saltwater with a 29g biocube. Not knowing that much and not doing enough research came back to bite me. If you don't have an automatic topoff set up make sure you're topping the water off daily. I never thougth about it and while the water level in the tank remained constant...I never saw the water level in the back chamber drop. My salinity spiked and I lost most of my soft corals.
