Branespikin Reefer 250

What did you mean when you say the chromis where done? After 6 weeks dead?

Let me be clearer. At six weeks into the cycle I decided that I could not take an empty tank any more. I added the chromis fish and they died with in a week. There was not enough bio load to support them

Thanks man I have a tank cycling now on my third week and I'm fighting the empty tank blues also...

Don't do it:D:D. I am going to start up a second tank soon and I will at the least wait 8 weeks before adding fish. You can start a small cleaning crew a 4 weeks, this will help in starting to establish the bio load. Also FYI do not add a bunch of fish at once, that als throws things off. One or two at a time

Well I've resisted this long I can go 5 more weeks lol I did add about 12000 pods to the tank 2 days ago and mangroves cheato and some macro algae when you say cleanup crew you talking snails and hermits?

Your well on your way. Looking forward to your build thread.

What i did was make a box to fit exactly in the back opening in chiller compartment like 4" deep and made the top panel 8" deep so it comes out just enough for my DOS to sit on. I hung all the apex on my wall behind so you just slide the box in and everything looks like its inside the box. Your tank has got to be like 3.5 to 4" for panel to be flush with cabinet face for a clean look. You got to leave space for cables when plugged in the apex so yo might not end really flush but 3/4" proud which is no big deal. I made the frint panel 3/4" shorter so i can stick my fingers in to pull door off. I put those like ball and catch hinges to attach the door on. Works pretty good.

This is a great idea!

Hey branespikin, how's the cycle going? I also started with mostly dry rock and just hit nitrates myself after 5 days, so would be curious how long it takes you to zero out ammonia. Also thinking of putting in that lid order this week, let me know if you have any updated impressions on it!

Hey man! Its going good i guess. I havent tested since Monday when Ammonia was zero nitrite zero an nitrate like 10-20 ppm. Didnt dose anymore ammonia or AF Bio S. Been busy wife and kid came back from vacation after 2 months!!! I dosed Ammonia 2-3 ppm Last Sunday night and on Monday afternoon tested and Ammonia and nitrite was zero. This has all together been 1 week since that happened. This Sunday will be 2 weeks.
As for the lid its doing its job considering i have no fish!! No but i really do like the way it sits on tank. It was pricey and i do have a few lil flaws like a scratch and net being too tight and bowing the lexan in middle creating a 3/16 gap in middle of tank lik rough on the edges too but im fine with that. I was one of the first orders so i think they may have rushed it a bit but overall im happy. I got the 3/8 upgrade with feeder door which is a must in my opinion.

That's probably the best place for it anyway, mine is in the garage. You need at least ten feet between the QT and DT due to the possibility of aeresole transmission.
So i went ahead and purchased a 10g for QT tank. Ill set it up in the basement. Now to do some research on how to setup a QT tank.

You don't really need much, just a simple HOB filter, powerhead, heater, thermometer, air pump with a sponge filter, ammonia badge and some pvc
You can also spray paint or cover with adhesive film the sides, back and bottom of the tank

I've borrowed this idea and made a few modifications to it! Thanks for sharing, I don't have time to build a "cabinet" like you did, so I am essentially building the same thing but mounted a board to my wall!

I got everything except that sponge filter. Didnt know i need that. I guess thats to aerate the water? Also the sponge will be an area for bacteria to grow?

I can lend you mine next week after I am done QT my last fishes. It will be already cycled.
Thats cool man! I got everything i need to setup my own. But what you mean i need to cycle this too?! I was thinking filling it up with the waterchange water i do from my DT. Oh man i need some reading up to do

Exactly, copper will remove a lot of oxygen from the tank so it's recommended to have one, not necessary if you have a powerhead agitating the surface of the water

According to Humblefish, it is recommended to start out with clean new saltwater mix but I have always used my water from my DT tank, I have also used some sort of media seeded from my DT for a couple weeks to set up my QT.
I also use Biospira to make sure I have enough beneficial bacteria whenever I set up a QT
