I'm a Grampa!

This is the second batch of eggs. The first batch she laid on top of a field of GSP about a foot away and then ate most them. I noticed both of them cleaning the rock next to the nem for quite a while now since. I figured they were getting ready for another batch.

Congrats! My pair of Maroons laid eggs every other week for over ten years. (Never was brave enough to rear a clutch of baby Maroons! LOL).
HA - no doubt.

This is a pair of saddlebacks. I also have a pair of maroons that live on the other side of the tank behind a pump. This is a 180 gal. The saddlesbacks are much bigger than the maroons, so they hide in the corner mostly and don't have an anemone. I think they need an anemone to lay eggs but I could be wrong. Currently, I have 5 rainbow bta's but their all in a cluster with the saddles.

I always thought it was cool that the day of or day before the eggs would hatch you would see the color morph from the bright orange in your picture to a silvery grey color, and if you look carefully you will see that is the color of the eyes forming. :) Good predictor of when to move the rock over to a nursery tank if you did want to attempt to rear them.

Well, most of the eggs are gone. Fiji puffers really like caviar! There's still a very small patch of eggs left and they are not red/orange any longer. It seems the other fish stopped going after them once the color changed.

Ironically, my Percula clowns have laid eggs twice this year as well. Once a few weeks ago and then over this past weekend. My tank is SPS dominant with minimal aquascaping, so there's really not a good place for them. I'm pretty sure that a crab or other fish took out the first batch...probably the same fate for the second.

Congrats. Mine used to be gone all time as the gigantea covered their nest. I would never see any fish until feeding time when a head would pop out.

But since I cleaned the powerhead and the flow changed, the gig moved too. Now the clowns have abandoned their parenting duties entirely. LOL
