Starting to introduce some Zoas and LPS to reef. The plugs are ugly and unstable. It seems like just the disc would be more aesthetic and stable. Is there a safe way to break them apart? I searched for what I thought would be a previous thread and found nothing

I use a strong electrical wire clipper and snip the base.

I use 6” bone cutters

I just use a pair of diagonal wire cutters.. not from my tool box but a dedicated pair for just this use. The bone cutters work also. But I always worried about damaging the cutting edge and then either damaging the coral or the cutters themselves.. you can get a cheap pair of dykes for a few bucks at any hardware store.

+1 that’s like what I use but I use the bigger ones to get more leverage

Yes! Always clean yoir equipment before and after use! Most tools from HD etc have oil/grease/WD40 on them so make sure to give them a good wash with dawn before using :)
Just remember, no matter which tool, stainless or not, give them a good wash under the faucet when your done to help prevent rust!

Ah just give them a big swish in the tank.. thatll rinse the rust right off. Lol
