Hi everyone I started to attempt to raise some clownfish have a Picasso and a black storm that had their first clutch a few weeks back only one survived so far out of 15 that I caught, they laid eggs on the glass it’s a bare bottom tank, it’s been 11 days since hatch can I just use live rock in a 20 gallon tall with a hob filter as a grow out tank? The space I have to put the tanks in isn’t that tall it’s about 40 inches high don’t think I’ll have enough room to put the tank and sump, I have the larva in a 5 gallon tank right now.

Congrats!! I recommend a sponge filter over a HOB as you may get fry sucked into it. Live rock is fine. Regarding the 20g tank, it’s fine but keep in mind you will need a lot more rotifers to keep the population density high enough for the fry to eat. I used a 10g which made it easier.

How are you doing with keeping your rotifer cultures going? I found that to be challenging.

Thanks, the rotifers I actually find pretty easy I have 2 5 gallon cultures going, for now it looks like I only need 1. It’s the phyto I’m having problems with for now I’m feeding rgcomplete hopefully I get the phyto down. I was thinking of keeping the fry in the 5 gallon then transfer to the 20g after meta. Do you keep them in the 10g from fry to juvenile?

I honestly skipped the photo and just did rotifers without issues. Make sure to mix that RG Complete before adding to the tank as it was too concentrated for my fry and killed a bunch in my early batches. I moved them to a couple 20g after meta but I had over 200 fry and needed to move then to larger tanks.

I should add I used the TDO series of food as the transition from rots.

That’s great!! I suggest you sit back, take a deep breathe, and decide if you really want to take on the challenge of raising them. There’s patience and practice required plus expenses for a rearing setup and live food.

also, keep in mind that you do not have to raise this particular batch. There’s a good chance they will keep laying eggs every few weeks for you

Here is a good link for details to get you started
